The Drotestants state the assessment of cattle at $20 per head is too low and that is should be raised to at least $35: sheep from $2.50 to $3. The protest against the assessment on land claims unequal assessment and that the lands have not been pro perly classified. Candidate for Governor Talks to Big Audience Dr. C. J. He con ducted the hotel with a bar in connection until 1888, when he engaged in other lines. VI ,T . n nity evening and it was one of the largest gatherings ever assem bled in Bums for a political speech. Dr. Smith spoke for about an hour and made a very favorable impression upon his hearers. His straight forward manner of handling things ap pealed to the people and he cer tainly made votes. He is not the radical man his enimies would picture him and should he be elected governor of Oregon we shall see an administration that is sane, economical and business like. His suggestions along the line of law enforcement struck a responsive chord among the voters, especially with the ladies, bringing out his honest convic tions of enforcing what laws we have without favor. He is right. If we have obnoxious laws we must take the proper means of dispensing with them. So long as they are on the statu tes they should be enforced by the proper authorities but finally disposed of this busi ness and had devoted his time to farming and stocking raising. Deceased was born in Califor nia April 20, 1856 and at the age of 13 started out to make his own way working at various occupa tions in California and Nevada before coming to this place. He was married on Feb. 15, 1886 to Miss Olive Bland and established a home in this city. Five child ren were born to this union, four of whom with the widow survive him: Jack. Dewey and Nicholas, all of this city, Mrs. J. C. Sevcik of Spokane. The fureral was held Thursday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Dr. Benson con ducting the services. Many old time friends attended to pay their last respect to one of t hH most generous and faithful friends they had ever known. He was highly respaated by his many acquaintances and the be reaved family have thesymhathy of the entire country. KiN-elior l. Resolutions of Sympathy. Successful Institute. In point of attendance and in terest taken one of the most suc cessful institutes ever held by the teachers of Harney county came to a close yesterday after noon. A large number of teach ers were registered and all ex press satisfaction and feel they have been benefited by the in struction they received from the instructions in attendence. The day sessions were well at tended not only by active teach ers but also by friends of educa tion and each period was follow ed with interest. But one night session was held when Asst. State Supt. Carleton and Rev. Dr. Benson gave interesting and instructive lectures. The in structors were E. F. Carleton, Asst. State Supt, Chas. Jones, editor of the Oregon Teachers Monthly; Mrs. M. L. Fulknerson of Oregon City, Frank H. Shep herd, Asst. Proffessor of Indus trial Education, O. A. C, Prof. H. K. Shirk of the Harney County High School, Prof. W. M. Sutton of the Burns Public School The Silent Messenger has en tered our Sisterhood, coming so quietly that we could with dif ficulty realize his presence until the shadow had fallen on our Sister Mabel Witter and she was summoned to answer the roll call in that assembly beyond. As our beloved ones are taken from us, we must get accustomed to the "vacant chair' and we some times feel as if it is more than we can bear, but time, the won derful healer, softens the first touch of grief and we live in the memories of that association. The memory of Sister Witter will long remain with us and we will have the blessing of having been one with her, la Vrutniuhiu, Love and Truth. Uesolved, That we extend our heart-felt sympathy to the be reaved husband and parentB who mourn for her, and words are inadequate to express our sympathy and sorrow. "Oh death where is thy sting; Oh grave where is thy sting." She was a true Rebekah, a loving friend, a devoted wife arid daughter. What more can we ask of a sister our sister? Resolved, That our chapter be draped in morning for thirty day and be it further. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the be reaved family.
