Last week The Times-Herald published a half-paure ad for the I. Schwartz general merchandis ing store, the object being a clearance of some gooda that were wanted out of the way be fore the fall goods arrived. The sale was to begin on Monday morning and continue for the week and employes of the store informed The Times-Herald Mon day morning before ten o'clock that already enough of the goods had been disposed of to, cover the amount the ad cost. Does it pay to advertise during dull months? The local merchants should keep right up to the min ute with their advertising and compete with the outside fellow who is sending in bids for the patronage of our home people. Something new at Tonawama. C. T. Cary is in the city today. John Sayer Jr. has returned from Union county where he has been employed in a saw mill. Clarence Young will order ex- i'oo I tras for Champion mowers, but 7S requires charges paid in advance. Frank Matney was in town j Thursday. He recently bought another band of sheep over in Malheur county. Harvesting has come on much earlier this season than last caused by the dry weather. The grain ripened faster than form erly. Rev. Wm. Baird. Sunday School Missionary of the Presby terian church, is here on one of his occasional visiU to the out lying districts of this county. James Mahon arrived home last night from his trip to Portland and other outside points. He was accompanied down by his son-in-law, Claud Smyth and wife, who remained in the city. WAR EXTRA! Beliaving its subscribers would appreciate the latest news from the war in Europe The Times Herald wired to Baker last even ing for information. The fol lowing was received respecting the war and is direct from Lon don yesterday. London, August 21 -Biggest battle in history begun today in Belgium south of Brussels ex tending up to -Waterloo, between the Germans and allies. Ger mans have captured Louvaine and are besieging Antwerp. Russians have taken Leik, Ger many. French are winning in Alsace. Japan is ready to strike in Asia. ADDITIONAL LOCALS Tonawama tonight. II. Holland has just re ceived a letter announcing the arrival of a baby girl in the fam ily of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gal lagher on the 15th of this month Mrs. . Gallagher was formerly Miss Ella Crowley. They reside at Edmonton, B. C Gov. West has recently said he would call an extra session of the legislature to adjust matters in connection with some recla mation project It does seem a pity that innocent home builders should be at the mercy of specu lative concerns that attempt to irrigate land and don't make good. The Carey act never was on a business basis and Oregon has suffered from it. Idaho has made a success of irrigation un der a similar act and had this state been in the hands of com petent men we would have been far in advance of our present development. Good Rraion for Hia Enthusiasm. When a man has suffered for ever days with colic, diarrhoea or other form of bowel complaint and is then cured sound and well by one or two doses of Chamber lain's Colic-. Cholera and Diarrh oea Remedy, as is often the case. it is but natural that he should be enthusiastic in his praise of the remedy, and especially is this the case of a severe attack when life is threatened, Try it when in need of such a remedy. It never fails. For sale by all dealers. It seems from an investigation being made by Congress that most of the food prices which have raised since the war started are artificial and dealers have raised just because they could. It is an imposition that authori ties should not permit. Road Master Faulkner and Hon. Frank Davey made a trip to Riverside yesterday to observe railroad conditions. They found some 70 men at work laying side tracks and preparing to sink a well for the water tank. They found no one of authority on the ground to give them any infor mation as to the extentions of the line on in but saw nothing to indicate other wise. Judge Lovett, President of the Harri man lines, was in Portland this week and the papers stated he held out no promise of further extention of any of the lines at this time, but said nothing that was discouraging either. Dr. Geo. G. Carl is prepared for special attention to all dis eases of eye, ear and nose. Eyes tested and glasses fitted. 50tf. How the TroubU StarU. No battle of any real consequence has been reported and the papers are filled up with rumors and speculation. Miss Florence Hoffeditz came in yesterday evening to spend a few days with her friend Mrs. Gault. Lester Gault, who had been spending the vacation at the Hoffeditz country home, came in also. Miss Nellie Reed and Mrs. E. B. Reed and family take this means for expressing their sin cere thanks to the many friends for the kind acts and words of sympathy during the late illness and death of Geo. W. Reed. R. J. McKinnon Jr. took his departure this morning for Port land where he is called on ac count of his wife who has to un dergo an operation for cancer. The many friends of the lady hope she will recover speedily. Dr. Griffith went up to the J. T. Garrett mountain home yes terday and brought Mrs. Garrett down. The lady is quite ill but her condition is not considered serious and it is thought she will recover speedily under the care of her physician. The Colonization Co. has se cured some fine photos of grain fields in this vicinity, taken by Heck, whieh will be used in a new lot of advertising matter being gotten out by them. The pictures are some of the best we have Been, showing some of the Hand that was in sage brush last year now with fine crops of grain. Mrs. Wm. .Hirsch, of Silver Creek, is at the Cummins hospi tal in a very critical condition. Dr. Griffith was called to the home on Tuesday to see her and found she suffering with appen dicitis.
