I UTSST DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE NOTES (Prom Our fortlnml OwnipOadvBt I Dr. James Withycombc. tlirec tor of the Oregon Kxperiment Station at Corvallia. ia authority for the statement made nt I ! cant meeting, that the hog hM paid more debts, built more homes and bought more clothes and school books for farmers and their children than any one pro duct in Oregon. Colonists are flocking to Or from every part ot the United States, taking advantage of the low one-way settlors' rates, now in force on the railroad. Indications are that the Spring movement will be heavy and that Oregon will gain just what she roost needs, a large number of thrifty farmers who will settle on the vacant lands of the slate and develop them. Central Ore gon homesteads are attracting a large number of newcomers. Industrial fair associations are being organized in various Ore gon counties that will further the work of the school children along these lines. Such organi zations have already been per fected in Sherman and Morrow counties and also one for Linn county at Albany. The Sherman county court has appropriated $660 for the fair and a list of at tractive piemiums is offered for the best showings. Other count ies are falling into line and the State Fair also promises to be better than ever next Fall. The railroads of the state have done a very helpful thing toward promoting the work of the school children's county industrial lairs, having agreed to carry the child ren's exhibits to and from the State fair free of charge. Ex- hibits must be assembled at one, or more convenient points in each county and all sent in to- gether. This means that the children in the most remote parts of Oregon will be encouraged to enter the contests and will have every advantage that those near er the State Fair location will en joy. The prize list is larger and more attractive than ever before and it is hoped that early prepar ations will be made for collect ing and shipping the exhibits. Polk's Oregon-Washington , Business Directory con Just issued for 1013-1 1 and is ' carried on by Robert Withycom be the only comDlete work of its I at the Eastern Oregon Experi kind published. It contains an Iment Station with interesting re accurate business directory of suits which will be of special every town and village in Ore- value this year on account of the gon and Washington, and the super-abundant otato crop. names and addresses of country T1.,, h()1.s in the exeriment merchants, professional in e n, lumbermen, etc., who are locat ed adjacent to villages; also lists of government and county offi cers, commissioners of deeds, state boards, statutory provi sions, terms of courts, nanus of the postoffices, express, tele phone and telegraph officers, justices of the peace; hotels, daily and weekly newspapers; besides much other informal n useful to classes of business and professional men. A descriptive sketch of each place is given, embracing various items of in terest, such as location, popula tion, distance to different points, the products that are marketed, stage communication, trade ia tistics, mineral interests, church es, schools, libraries and societ ies. An impotant feature is the classified directory, giving every business arranged under its spec ial heading, thus enabling sub scribers to obtain at a glance a list of all houses manufacturing or dealing in any particular line of goods. The work, generally, is compiled to meet the wants of the business community, and is so thorough as to deserve liberal patronage. Chronic Stomach Trouble Cured. There is nothing more discour aging than a chronic disorder of the stomach, and it is surprising that many suffer for years with such an ailment .when a perma nent cure is within their reach and may be had for a trille. "'About one year ago," says J'. H. Beck, of Wakelce, Mich., "I bought a package of Chamber lain's Tablets, and since- using them I have felt perfectly well. Expect to plant at the earliest opportunity. Also a very wide variety of grainB, grasses, and other field crops are arriving from all parts of the United states. Drawee? Sub-Station visited. Rabbit fence installed, peas planted. Planting will be done on a limited scale at this Station on account of the dry condition of the soil. This condition is due to the fact that the land was broken late last summer and has only the winter's moisture in it. No particular success in growing crops is expected until -next year. Have sent out sample packages of seed all over the country Re ceiving and answering a great many inquiries about crops and how to grow them etc. Planted a hot bed. Ordered enough trees and small fruit to plant two Mid a half acres. All of hardy varieties and enough to make a pretty thorough test of all varieties that are at all suit able to this country. List of slock ordered to follow latter. Also getting a wide variety of the hardy and early vegetables for trial. There is at present about fif teen acres of Winter grain on Station, including 20 varieties of wheat. 2 of emmer, 1 of rye and six of barley. The wheat and rye is started out mceiy on hm whole. The barley and emmer has suffered considerable win terkill. Expect to plant-about half of the station this year and summer fallow the other half. Crops will include an extensive trial of varieties of peas, wheat, barley, oaU, emmer, alfalfa. Max, pota- I toes, artichokes, corn, rajie am several others. Expect to plant 15 acres of alfalfa for seed. lir iera f fold peas in double rows, l.i acres of wheat and consider able quantities of oats, emmer, barley, etc. Potatoes Fed Raw Or Steamed To Fatten Hogs An experiment to test the feed ing value ot raw or steameu x- tatoei as supplementary feed with a grain ration, has been were divided into eight lots, and records of the different feed ra tion given each and the propor tionate gain made were kept carefully, Lach hog in lots 1 and 2 ate an average of 170. IN lbs. of barley and 509.63 lbs. of raw potatoes, making a gain in weight of 60.70 lbs. Those in lots :i and 4 ate 110.30 lbs. barley and 668.76 lbs steamed potatoes and made a gain of 70.60 lbs. while those in lots 5 and 6 ate 188.60 potatoes and made a gain of 78.10 lbs. Lots 7 and 8 ate 800. 10 lbs. bareley without pota toes and made a gain of 69.5 lbs. The last two lots, fed barley alone, was used as a check on the others to show definitely the proportionate value on the mark et value of $.07 a pound in live weight, the hogs fed barley made I 1487 gain, which makes the barley feeding value $1.62 to the hundred. I .oi . 1 and 2, fed barley and raw potatoes at the rate of 3 lbs of potatoes to lib of barley, made a 14.26 gain, which gives the i aw potatoes a feeding value of $.29 to the hundred. Lots 3 and 4, receiving six times as much steamed ixjtatoes as barley, made a $4.94 gain, giving the steamed potatoes a feeding value of $.47 to the hundred. l)ts 5 and 6. fed three times as much potatoes as barley, made a $5.47 gain, making the feeding value of the potatoes $.42 to the hundred. It is noticable that those fed six times as much of the pota toes as grain did not make quite the gain made by the others, but it required 85.26 lbs. less barley to make this gain, so the difference in feeding value is ac counted for. It is also noteworthy that the ham potatoes are worth $.13 more to the hundred than raw for feeding, as shown in com parison of the gains of animals fed the 3 to 1 ration. The Mother's Favorite. A cough medicine for children should be harmless. It should he pleasant to take. It should be effectual. 'hamberlain's Cough Remedy is all of this and is the mothers' favorite everywhere. For sale by all dealers. ACCUSED OF GRABBING LAND FOR STA. (I'nii. Iinlcil I'mni I'irst I'tige) ves is concerned ? The secret of that is thai under the act of 1906 settlers would have a right to go I in there and make applications for these agricultural lands, and if they were agricultural they would have a right under the law, if it were administered pro perly to acquire title to them. Hut there was an exception to the law, and that was that if the lands were needed for govern mental purposes the government would have the right to retain them in spile of the other provi sions of th" law. So. whenever there is an agricultural area which a settler might utilize to his advantage, in order to pre vent its being entered by a bona lido settler they have established thereon a ranger station. "I think everyone will agree with me that that is not conser vation It is no part of conser vation, it la what the president lac! called reservation. It is Impeding the settlement of our country. It is that class of ad ministration Mr. President, from which I ask relief) and nothing else." NOTIOI TOR PUBLICATION. UNITI D STATU I INI' OFFICE.
