No advance agent of prosper ity has heralded thoapproch of a summer run of fat grass beef from the tran-Missouri range this year and the absence of stereotype forecasts is signifi cant. Usually the season is in augurated by the arrival of a con signment of fat Wyoming or Montanna steers that warrants the use of the camera and head lines in the market papers. This season opened inauspiciously with the arrival of a few lots of bovine refugees from the scorch ed pastures of Montana and South Dakota, mostly little stud" unfreighted with beef nnd hav ing no place at the market. That they would not have been there had grazing conditions per mited holding is obvious. Ship ping calves, heifers and cows in July off the range tells the story of hardship eloquently. The blow dealt at the cattle breeding industry in the West last year is being repeated and the "ncster" is discouraged. Early arrivals from the Northwest included 18 cars of young stuff gathered in the northwest corner of Soutli Dakota that only realized around 20 per head in Chicago, a feeder paying $3.75. A year ago, on a somewhat higher feeder market they realized $5.10. The season opened with a run of little cattle of excellent quality but thin as rails, and composition of the con signments indicated that every thing had been gathered. Naturally packers are not look ing for much fat grass steers from the Northwest this year. There will be some, but not in old time abundance. So far as grass and humidity arc concerned the cattle country embracing the Dakotas. Montana and Wyoming is as spotted as tho cornbelt Trade scouts tell of sections that have had no rain for two years; of others where feed is fairly nlentiful and stock water not yot exausted, but over large areas neither food nor water exists, and where old grass is lo be had cattle cannot utlize it owing water shortage. The western cattle itk the next four mop' , e inconspicuous moment of sonso, bur" ..ns may not be in be' ,n a numencal r. . that it will be deficient i is evident, and this fact vjght to exert a bullish influencd on the value of what the corn belt will send to market.
