i itil i B minium u-i-uui iiimiwwwi NO IMMEDIATE WORK IN ORCf.ON. A recent dispatch from Spokane- to the Journal says: Presi dent Louis W. Hill of the Great Northern was waiting nt the Northern Pacific station tonight together with C. M. Graves of tho Spokane & Inland, a Hill roa 1, and Carl S. Gray of Porlliu 1, when the train hearing Prcsidi it Elliott of tho Northern Pnci.lc castwanl arrived shortly hefc ro 10 o'clock. Tho heads of t'io two hig systems greeted each other cordially. Thoy wero join ed hy E. J. Cannon, the North ern Pacific's attorney, and im mediately repaired to the privacy of Elliott's car. "The proposed joint usago of Hill and Harriman lines in places throughout the northwest is still a matter of debate. I do not know that such n plan will be worked out, for I don't know yet how it can be satisfactorily," stated President Hill to n Journal correspondent just before a meet ing with Elliott "I will leayo for Portland with Mr. Gray and Mr. Harris, chair man of the board of directors of C. B. & Q. about 8 o'clock in the morning. Wo will bo in Portland two or three days is possible and while there will meet Mr. O'Prien and Mr. Kruttschnitt, but this talk of us officials meeting hero for a conference is nonsense. It is merely a coincidence. "For my parti have made this trip to confer with Mr. Gray re garding his work, henco am making the trip I to Portland by daylight to look over tho part of the system of which he'll have charge "I shall be glad to visit Port land again and look over the country surrounding, believing from present reports that Oregon will have big crops this season. "The Great Northern is not planning any immediato develop ment in Oregon or Washington." ADVERTISE IN HOME PAPERS. "Put your advertisements in newspapers that are fit to go into the home," was the advise of W. F. Lipman of the firm of Lipman, Wolfe & Co., in talking to 1000 ad men and members of the Portland Ad Club at a meet ing last week. He said: "Today 90 per cent of the advertising is accomplished through news papers. It is the most success ful and the only correct medium when results are to be obtained. Today, no matter what the business, the first question to be determined is the advertising Second comes the medium and it is the medium that I wish to talk about Marshall Field, I believe, was said to have laid down this rule: 'First show me that the paper is the paper of the homo and I will take up the question of the size of my advertising.' "In other words, Mr. Field held to the theory that the newspaper must be the home paper and to be a home paper vou must first print the news that is fit to print. He always said that he never cared to advertise in a paper whose circulation was on the street and in the by-ways. Fake advertising, even in the papers of the home, in the end will bring failure. "Primarily, a concern to last in the advertising field must tell the truth. Tho goods must be of the value as represented. No man can succeed in the establish ment of a business upon a fake foundation. Quality and square treatment are tho sound watch words of a sound business. I would rather have an ad in the paper that went to the homes, no matter how small than the entire contents of a paper which circulated hero and there and lived by false representation. A newspaper to secure a foundation must tell the truth, be accurate and be clean in the treatment of the affairs which it pretends to report. Pick out the clean paper to do your advertising. Never Belcct tho mushy kind, for they will do you no good. Advertise in tho paper that is read at home, is liked for the comfort it brings to the home and the truthfullncss and tho care with which it pre pares its reading matter. You surely will get results." Pacific Stock and Poultry food at tho Lunaburg, Dalton & Co. Department Store. NUW CLUimiNd PROPOSITION Wo have arranged to offer in connection with this paper, tho now monthly farm magazino just itartod at Lincoln, Nebraska, by Prof. II. W. Campbell and devot ed to tho subject of how to fnrm in tho dry country and how to got best results from soil tillago under normal conditions. This Paper is Campbell's Scientific Farmer and wo oirer it clubbed with Tho Times-Tcrald both for $2. GO per year cash. Prof. Camp bolls' new paper is a monthly, chock full of good things, tho only paper of its kind in tho world, and it embodies tho re sults of tho editor's many years of painstaking investigation of tho soil tillago proposition.
