Oregon should have the beat fairs in its history this autumn, says tho Oregon Journal. There is no good reason why expositions of great merit should not bo maintained in tho west as well as in tho central and eastern states. Oregon has done well in the past, but she should do better in the future. Tho county fair has proved itself a wonderful inspiration wherever it has been encouraged and managed with ability. The annual gathering of farmers and their families, and comminging of men of all professions and oc cupations, the competitions, the interchange of ideas, all have a broadening and helpful elVect upon tho people of any country or section. The spirit of the fair is one of mutual helpfulness, of efforts to do better work, to make a better showing for the country and the individual farm. There is no good reason why the number of fairs in Oregon should be limited to a few in the more densely settled centers. Every county in the state could support an annual show, as a nuitter of fact no county can afford to be without one. The cost of pre paring the exhibit should not be figured as expense but an invest ment. With splendid exposi tions, with hearty co-operations, on the part of the farmers and business interests of any county, conditions are improved and the feeling of co-operation is strengh ened beyond comprehension. With the state behind it the state fair at Salem must be a success, and its lessons are worth all it costs. But one fair is not enough. The people of tho grain growing sections cannot leave home long enough to come to the Willamette valley to spend a few days inspecting the results of the labors of the people of the state. No county can afford to pass up its "county fair." J. S- SURVEYORS ARPIVE. The recent order of congress to have several unsurveyed town ships in the southwestern part of this county surveyed has brought a big corps of government en gineers here for that purpose. They arrived here Thursday and in all there are something over 40 people who will engage in the work. The crowd flocked into the French hotel at noon and made Lloyd Culp do some hustling to take care of them. They spent yesterday in secur ing supplies and outfiting and will at once proceed to their destination, the party being aug mented by several local boys who will assist in the work. Ghes. Carter and wife and Chas. Cozad and wife are with them the boys acting as team sters and the ladies will assist in cooking at different camps. The work covers a large terri tory, extending from Iron Moun tain south and east to the Nevada line, and it will take at least three months to complete the surveys. There will be some three or four camps. This work is the result of an effort of the Burns Commercial Club which took the matter up last winter. LOCAL OVERFLOW. Geo. Buchanan was in from home Wednesday. Several threshing machines are busv in this vicinity at this time and the yield of grain is quite satisfactory. A. E.
