J JfilTilAWIKl i liifT-iifc,'i-- TutT ,HSV "" iiiiih r rtsm . t kr 11 I it i 'S - INDUSTRIAL NOTES. ( Portland Correspondence) . Much work on the rivers nnd harbors of the Pacific Northwest will bo accomplished duritiK the coimmr year provided the rec ommendations 'of Major Melndoo, corps of United States Engineers. in charjio of this district, aro followed. Major Melndoo has just made his annual report to the Secretary of War ami urges the expenditure of !1, 012,500 in river and harbor improvements in this district for the fiscal year ending June IK). 1011. The largest appropriation rec ommended is 9.500.000 for con tinuing the improvement at the mouth of the Columbia Hiver. Tin sum of $1,000,000 is urged for work in the same stream be tween The Dalles rapids and Cehlo Falls. The remainder of the desired appropriation is divi ded between the diit'erent coast harbors and work on the Colum bia, Willamette, Snake and other rivers, including the Cowlitz, Grays and Lewis rivers in Wash ington. Accouling to the report, oper ations during the past year con sisted largely in dredging shoal places between Portland and Astoria in the Willamette and Columbia rivers and in extend ing the Columbia jetty besides some work at Coquille and Tilla mook and dredging in the Upper Willamette and Upper Columbia. If Major Mclmloe's recommen dations are carried out, they will mean much permanent work of great value to the whole Pacific Northwest. Portland takes fourth place vi-SHflmffcities of the United States in wheat exports for the 11 months of the current year end ing with November. This is ac cording to the report of the Sec retary of the Treasury on bread stuffs exported from this country. uget Sound comes next after ortland. New York is first, 'liladelphia second and Duluth ird. Last year Portland rank 1 second in the country in heat shipments. The figures st compiled of wheat exports lot include large shipments oFwheat from Portland to Cali fornia. This tonnage is very Jieavy each year. The fine new steamship Bear for the run between Portland and San Francisco will start west from Newport News, Virginia, January 9 and her sister ship, the Beaver, will come soon after. Both will go into commission at once upon arrival. These boats are the new Harriman liners built f6r thc'Const' route and are the finest ever in commission be tween here and the south. Blooded chickens and cats from various parts of the Pacific North west have had their innings dur ing the past week at the show of the Oregon Poultry & Pet Asso ciation. A splendid show was held, many of the prize fowls having been on exhibition at the recent Seattle Exposition. The exhibit of pure blood poultry shows the advance in this indus try in the Northwest within the past few years. Delegates from Oregon, Wash ington, Idaho, Mor.tr.r.2 a.vJ Utah will attend the convention of the Western Retail Lumber Dealers' Ass'n., which will meet in Port land, February 14, 15 and 10. Lav- entertainment of the visitors by the manufacturers of this dis trict will be a feature of the con vention and plans to give the delegates a good time aro already under way. A committee, head ed by W. B. Mackay, has this feature in charge. An elaborate banquet is on the program and trips to the sawmill plants near thr city, exouisions on the har bor, and probably a jaunt to a logging camp in the timber not far from Portland are promised. The gathering will be an impor tant one in lumber circles and it is expected there will be 400 del egates in attendance. Danger of Tod Large Farms. The work of tho general land agent who sells great tracts of land is not to be encouraged; for what is desired is tho man who can take up a small tract and operate it successfully. Tho great trouble and danger in farn ng life is for a man to try to carry more than his capital warrants. It must bo remem bered that no business can thrive without capital of some capacity - capacity sufficient to carry on its work, and tho poor man is prone to tackle more than ho can handle. The man that says 'get a big tract and work it on a few hundred dollars' is mislead ing, Mako suro of what you can do and then do it. Tako a small tract and cultivate it and thrive, "juid if can '- ""rinnded for its success you will have it and the result will be to encourage others to follow your lead and our farms will soon be occupied nnd the country benefited. Brother Kennedy of the He view did the most sensible thing in his life last evening when ho look unto himself a wife. lie and Mrs. Minn Wilmarth were quietly married in her apartments at the Redby in the presence of a few friends, Hov. C. P. Bailey performing the ceremony. The bride and groom are old exper ienced newspaper people and de cided that ono "chase" would hold both forms. The "make ready" was rushed a little by the groom as ho got his license a couple of weeks ago. We hope the delay was "justified." May their "quoins" never slip or their "forms got pied" is the wish of the Journal. Prineville Journal. And hero is why help comes so quickly. Dr. Snoop doesn'tdrug the stomach, nor stimulate the heart or kidneys. Dr. Shoop's Restorative goes directly to the weak and failing nerves. Each organ has its own controlling nerve. When these nerves fail, the depending organs must of necessity falter. This plain, yet vital truth, clearly tells why Dr. Shoop's Restorative is so univer sally successful. Its success is leading druggists everywhere to give it universal preference.
