Simpson, tho well known Ore gon poet, who wrote "Beautiful Willamette." Mr. Simpson was an alumnus of Willamette Uni versity and it was thought fitting that the movement to procure the memorial to tho poet should have its start at tho university and that the monument should stand near it. An association for tho purpose has been formed among the alumni of tho univer sity. It is intended to interest the entire Northwest in the movement What is regarded as the most important conference over held between the Congressional dele gation of this state and the com mercial interests of Portland took place this week when the needs of the state were discussed for two hours nnd suggestions made as to needed improvements that require government aid. Senators Bourne and Cham berlain met with 15 prominent business men and when the con ference ended, tho Senators had pledged their aid to secure as big appropriations as possible for this state. Among the big pro jects for which aid was enlisted were the improvement of the Columbia River from Portland to the sea; the free canal and locks at Oregoh City; the Celilo Cannl and the improvement of Coos Bay. These improvements are ex pected to cost about as follews: Columbia River improvement, $15,000,000; $3,700,000 for the completion of the Celilo Canal; $2, 700,600 for the improvement of Coos Bay, and $-156,000 for the free canal and locks at Ore gon City. Out of the money needed for the latter project, the state has already authorized an appropriation of $300,000, leaving only $156,000 to bo fur nished by the government. Portland may take in neigh boring suburbs before the census of next year is taken. The mat ter was discussed by the Realty Board at the Commercial Club this week and was .generally favored. This addition to the city would include only those districts lying so near that it is impossible to tell when passing from the city proper to the sub urbs. An expression will asked from tho various districts, W" as to their opinion en the annex ation question. Tho property nnd business of tho Cornott Stngo & Stnblo Com pany has been purchased by J. II. and George Reams, who to- gothcr with a third party will incorporate under tho old nnmo with a capital of $0000.
