There is a structure, however, which, in conjunction with conservative man agement, insures safety at all times, and that is a large "Surplus Building." The Pacific Banker, the leading financial journal of the Northwest, makes the following pointed observations in a recent editorial, "Now, The Time For Surplus Building." the key note of which is "Conservatism" and "Surplus." "In the present period of unprecedented business activity, the creatior. of a liberal surplus is certain ly the part of wisdom. The surplus of a hank is not only its strength, but in one sense it is the only thing it does not owe. The individual fails who makes no provision for a rainy day, and the hank which does not speedily create and retain u larcc surplus is liable to meet the same fate. ' To create a large surplus and create it quirkh houM he the aim of every' conservative bank, for the rea son that there invariably comes a time whin the presence or absence of surplus affects vitally its life and history."
