' ' Don 't go to this Chicago revival of Weber-Fields' spirit unless you want to be very young," said Mr. Stevens. "If you have in you any of t ho instincts of the Mormon, stay far, far away . from this matchless chorus. Chicago may lack in smooth G reets and hard coal, but as a pro ducer of a girl, .beautiful, Chicago is in truth the center of the country. ihey were countless, and they wore countless costumes, costumes' almost as pretty and as s.auoy and as beau- lul and diabolical and as smart and sweet as themselves. It was no gath ering for Sultan's husband, I pledge you. The cast he characterizzed as "The most formidable ever assembled at a theatre in Chicago. After over 400 years of obscurity, Christopher is to be given due credit for his discovery of this country, for the Legislature last winter des ignated October 12 as "Columbus Day,',' and it will be celebrated in this state for the first time next Thursday as a legal holiday. Twenty-nine states have now honored the ancient mariner, the "Admiral of the Seas," as the bold explorer was called in his day. The county offices and banks of the city will be closed on that day. From the fact that Columbus was by birth an Italian, the residents of Portland and state, who claim sun ny Italy as their former home' or the home of their forefathers, will hold elaborate" ceremonies. Originallv it had been planned for President Taft to speak on the man who discovered the New World dur ing his visit in Portland, in addition to his political speech, and the Pres ident was to have been the guest of the Knights after the local commit tee had completed its programme The- date of Mr. Taff's visit was sub sequently changed, however, to Oc tnber 11 from October 12 and that disarranged the schedule.
