Oscar McCollum has returned from California and says Oregon is good enough for him. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Vester Townsend, of McMInnville, is visiting his grand-parents. Hon. D. L. Keyt returned Tuesday from a business visit to Eugene. Miss Rose Faist is spending a few days with her parents at McCoy." Lots of Indians went to the Slletz to spend the Fourth. Paul Fundman and Mr. Fennell were up here last Friday. Hugh Black passed through here last Friday on his way to Dallas. Lester Butler, of Dallas, has been visiting his brother, Glenn. Miss Beta Rowell visited relatives in Sheridan last Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Butler visited In Dallas last Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Willis Rowell have been visiting their brother, Lee Rowell. Mrs. Jane Ellis, of Sheridan, is visiting her mother, Mrs. Shepard, who is quite sick. Roy Faulconer, of Sheridan, passed through here Tuesday on his way to the coast to spend the Fourth. POLK. There Is no hay damaged as yet. David Peters Is reported very sick. The recent rains have done more good than damage. The Rev. Jacob Schrag, of Men no, Wash., was here over Sunday. The apple crop is going to be very short in this part of the county. Our road district received a large two-wheeled road scraper a few days ago. A good many people from Marion county were here to attend the Child ren's Day exercises. Some of the neighbors have donated work towards fixing the road through the hills near Mr. Boydston's place. The Children's Day exercises and Sunday School picnic were a decided success. A large crowd was in attendance. Our supervisor received 60 feet of large tubing last week to be used for culverts in the large ravine between here and Dallas. BODY FOUND IN RIVER Stepson of Henry Patterson Meets Death by Drowning. Stanley Brown, who was seriously Injured and his thigh broken, Is having a serious time with the broken limb. Robinson Brothers have botight Barnhart & Grant's meat market and moved the fixtures to their market building. INDEPENDENCE. Eli Ferguson was a Salem visitor Wednesday. Mrs. J. C. Morrison was a Dallas visitor this week. Miss Ethel Whiteaker visited in Sa lem the first of the week. Charlie Allin, of Rickreall, was an Independence visitor, Sunday. J. M. Stark has returned from a trip to South Bend and other Washington towns. Wild blackberries are in market and find ready sale at 60 cents per gallon. Professor and Mrs. French, of the Weston Normal, visited friends here last week. Mrs. E. E. Paddock visited in Port land last week, returning home by Salem, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Drexler enter tained the Crab Club at their home Friday evening. The Epworth League of the Meth odist church gave a highly successful The body of Harold Long, the 18- year-old son of Mrs. H. R. Putterson, of Portland, who was drowned in the Columbia river about two weeks ago, was brought to this city yesterday afternoon by his mother and step father, who went to St. Helens for the purpose of Identifying the remains. Young Long left Washougal, Wash., In a 16-foot canoe the evening of June 18. He expected to paddle to Portland and to reach this city the next day. When the young man failed to put in his appearance his relatives became anxious and started a search. Two days later his boat was fouDd at the head of Sauvle's Island and in it was his coat. The boat was right side up and had drifted ashore. No trace was found of the missing lad until Sunday night, when two brothers named Scott found the badly decom posed body near the ranch of Antone Barber on Willamette Slough about seven miles from St, Helens. The young man was a nephew of Captain L. B. Hosford of the river steamer Jessie Harkins, and the latter has been indefatigable in his search for the missing lad. The body is supposed to be the floater reported sighted by Captain Harry Emken, whe saw it while pilot ing the steamship Mathilda up the river Saturday. The body was taken to the undertaking establishment of J. P. Finley & Son, where the funeral will be held today at noon.
