..lv Polk County Observer J. O. HAYTEll, KDITOR AND PUBLI9HKH. Published Weekly at 11.50 per Strictiv in Advance. Year. IMLLA8.0RKG0N, Fsbruary , 1907 The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. WILL ADVERTISE DALLAS. Tho Dalla8 Board or Trade is a thins of the past. The work heretofore performed by that body will now be done by the LaCreole Club, the popular business men's organization, wnicn has volunteered to combine business with its social features. The club will soon move into handsome and commodious quarters in the Odd Fellows' building, and will be in a position to handle the work of pub licity and development to excellent advantage. The Board of Trade was organized six years ago for a special purpose- that of organizing the business men to secure the construction of a rail road between Dallas and Falls City. The Board started out with a large and enthusiastic membership, and the object for which it was formed was soon accomplished. After the com pletion of the road, interest in the organization began to wane, and for the last five years, the furnishing of all the money for its support and all the work carried on in its name haa fallen to tho lot of its two principal officers. The last work of public im portance accomplished by these men was the raising of the subsidy for the big sawmill at the railroad company's terminal grounds in South Dallas. For several years the organization has been absolutely wlth&ut funds, except numerous small amounts ad vanced by the President and Secretary, and it was therefore a welcome relief to these officers when the LaCreole Club volunteered to share the burden of tho work and expense. It Is a difficult matter to maintain a livo commercial organization in small cities, for tho reason that the enthusiastic interest of business men can onlv bo aroused when there is some project of great importance on foot, and after the object sought is accomplished, interest at once begins to die out. But with an organization combining business and social features, and composed of livo men, such as are to be found la the mem bership of the LaCreole Club, there is no reason why great success should not be achieved in building up Dallas and Polk county and advertising their advantages and resources In such way as to bring golden returns. DALLAS DOES THINGS. The old saying that "the Lord helps those that help themselves," was the result of observation that those who wait for someone else to do something for them wait in vain, while those who do things for themselves attract oth ers who help them to do more. It is well known that ten years ago the Hood river community possessed lit tle but great capacity to hustle and great natural possibilities. Jow ev erybody helps to advertise Hood Eiver and its products, and enterprising men with capital are steadily coming there to help turn the possibilities into realities. Dallas is auother Oregon community that has got Into the habit of doing things for itseir, and if it keeps on doing as well as it has of late it will not be many years before Dal las will be one of the most widely and favorably known cities of the Willa mette Valley.
