POLICY HOLDERS PROTECTED Believed That $50,000 Deposit Re quired by State From Each Com pany Will Prevent Loss. While insurance companies have lost heavily by the San Francisco dis aster, it is believed that Oregon policy holders have no occasion to apprehend loss through the Insolvency of any of the companies, as the deposit of $50, 000 which each of them is required to make before doing business in this state is a sufficient guaranty of their policies. W. J. Clemens, the local representa tive for the Royal Insurance company says: "While the losses in San Francisco have been severe, Oregon policy holders need not feel alarmed as to the solvency of the companies. The deposit of $50,000, which each company is required to place with the Secretary of State, cannot be called on to pay San Francisco losses until all Oregon losses have been provided for. No company has sustained losses in this state exceeding $30,000 in one year, so the deposit will be ample protection. "There is no immediate cause of anxiety c$u this score. But there m ust be a great readjustment of business. I do not think that the insurance companies will lose over one third of their liabilities in San Francisco, but some of them may be forced to retlro from business. Oregon may well be thankful that it has that law requir ing $50,000 deposit from insurance companies. An effort was niaJe in the laBt session of the legislature to repeal the law, but it was unsuccess ful." Sutfered lor Five Years with Kidney and Liver Trouble. "I sunered for five years with kidney and liver trouble, which caused severe pains across the buck and a blinding headache. I had dyspepsia and wub po uonetiputeu that 1 could not move my bowels without a cat hurt ic. I was cured by Chamberlains Stomach and Liver Tablets and have been well for six months," says Mr. Arthur S. Strickland, of Chattanooga, Tenn. For sale by Stafrin Drug Co. FARMER VIEW OF PRIMARY Believes Law Should Be Passed Mak ing Method of Nominating Candi dates Less Expensive. DALLAS, Ore., April 24-i.To the Editor.) As a Republican, and stand ing for the best politics obtainable, improving wherever and whenever possible, I wish to state my view on the new primary election law, its workings, and futher improvement for progress must be our motto and purity our desire. The advertising was overdone. I think, by a large number of state can didates. I believe it to be good, though, to come out boldly with the decided views each holds as to the particular office he desires to be nominated for, as some did the people to decide if the candidate's word can be depended on, which is not so easy. We common people, or farmers are too willing to be treated to drinks or cigars, etc., thus encouraping graft, which most of us kick so hard against. We can plainly see the large ones, or the ending; but not our small ones; or the beginning, where we are con cerned personally. Here is really the root of the evil: As long as people come to vote because they expect and try to get treats, cash, or rides there for, so long will we not have the best officials, or laws that we can and ought to have, and no one but the common people will be to blame. Money is always ready for traitors or bad deeds. My suggestions for Improving the primaries are two: First a sample ballot should be mailed to each voter, so that he may have a chance to mark it at home a day or two before the primaries, thereby avoiding corrupt influences. I believe that those who fail to register do not care for pure politics. As a rule, they expect to be coaxed with a treat or a ride, which no decided voter should care for. Second Make it a law not to spend money for cigars, drinks of any kind, or presents which blind voters only in morality. The expenses keep the best men back because they may be poor and cannot afford such campaigning; then fine such candidates as break such law lowest for county and high est for state candidate. I would like to see others express their views and offer suggestions as to how to obtain the best primaries, with a view of not running up expense for state, county, and candidates not losing sight of morality. Personally, I have no axe to grind. john g; REMPEL. 'Tails City note$ Health Is Youth. Disease and Sickness Bring Old Age.
