Polk County News 8A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • January 17, 2018 OBITUARIES Dorothy Jean Turnbull John ‘Bud’ Earl Depweg Dec. 3, 1924 – Jan. 4, 2018 July 7, 1930 – Dec. 25, 2017 Dorothy Turnbull, 93, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, in Monmouth. She was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Atlantic, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and Iva Magill. D o t graduated f r o m At - lantic High School, at- tended Tarkio Col- lege, trans- ferring to the University of Iowa, where she completed her undergraduate degree in physical education. She earned a master’s de- gree at Penn State Universi- ty, where she met her hus- band, Robert Turnbull, of Beaver Falls, Penn. They were married in At- lantic on June 22, 1950. Four months later, they boarded a freighter traveling to Egypt with four head of Jersey cattle. Thus began an adult lifetime of faith, the essence of which is summa- rized by a favorite hymn, “Trust and Obey.” Dot and Bob served 37 years doing agricultural mission work under the United Presbyterian Church in Egypt and later in Thai- land. She liked to wink and say, “I went to Egypt with four head of cattle and returned with five kids!” Dot lived her life investing in people, whether in rural development, leadership training, school administra- tion, teaching, coaching or in retirement. She was a gift to those around the world who had the opportunity to know her. She was preceded in death by daughter, Carol Turnbull (1998) and hus- band Robert (2004). She is survived by daugh- ters Ann Turnbull (Brainerd, Minn.), Janet Sheldon (Mon- mouth), Nancy Loh (Moun- tain View, Calif.), and son, Lee Turnbull (Tiffin, Iowa); along with their spouses, six grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Services will be held in Iowa in June. John “Bud” Earl Depweg passed away at the age of 87 at his cherished home on Devil’s Lake near Lincoln City on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2017. Bud was born in Jackson, Mich., on July 7, 1930; the oldest of five chil- dren, to J o h n W. a n d Mi l - dred Dep- weg. H e eventually moved to California, where he later met the love of his life in Santa Barbara, Joyce Depweg (Davis), and they wed on June 26, 1965. With two kids in tow (Jennifer and Joe), they moved to Salem in 1969, where he worked at Capital Toyota as their parts and service man- ager until 1979. Bud then owned and op- erated A to Z Auto Partz Store in Independence until his retirement in 1992, when Bud and Joyce moved to Devil’s Lake full time. Always full of seemingly endless energy, Bud loved outdoor activities including camping, fishing, hunting, boating and water sports. A true “John of all Trades,” he was able to fix and build just about anything — in- cluding their home on Devil’s Lake. He also took up oil paint- ing, wood carving and stained glass during his re- tirement years, and always had a love of photogra- phy — especially anything to do with eagles, blue herons, egrets and sunsets. Bud was an active mem- ber of the Monmouth-Inde- pendence Chamber of Com- merce, where he was given the First Citizen award in 1984; and he belonged to the Elks and Lions Clubs. Bud was also very active with the Preservation Asso- ciation of Devil’s Lake (PADL). He proudly served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1948 through 1955, and belonged to St. Augus- tine Catholic Church.
