Monmouth St., Independence. The class will teach chil- dren and their families how to make festive holiday tree ornaments. Children should be old enough to manage scissors, glue, tape and other art supplies. All family art classes are free. Registration is not re- quired. COMMUNITY CALENDAR WOU’s CAI lecture series returns Western Oregon Universi- ty’s Center for Academic In- novation’s Community Lec- ture Series returns on Tues- day. Grief workshops offered for families Willamette Valley Hospice will offer special workshops to help grieving children and adults. Participants will gain practical ideas and coping strategies to assist them in their grief during the holi- day season. The first workshop will be Tuesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at West Valley Hospital for adults only. For adults with children ages five and older, an ex- panded workshop with age- appropriate activities will be offered on Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Willamette Valley Hospice office, at 1015 Third St. NW in Salem. Meet and greet with WOU students Monmouth Senior Center will host a meet and greet with students from Western Oregon University’s social ties and aging class at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Paul Evans will host a series of speeches to com- memorate Veteran’s Day. The presentations will highlight some of the chal- lenges facing the 21st centu- ry veteran and ways the public can honor and assist citizen-soldiers. Senior center hosts veterans breakfast The Monmouth Senior Center will host a free break- fast for veterans and their families on Wednesday (today) from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the center, 180 S. Warren St., Monmouth. The event is also spon- sored by the Disabled Amer- ican Veterans and the AmVets 1776 Ladies Auxil- iary. The community is wel- come to attend. Swing your partner at Guthrie Park Guthrie Park Community Center will host its monthly second Saturday Old Time Square Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday at the center, 4320 Kings Valley Highway (Highway 223), at the corner of Cooper Hol- low Road. Annual art, quilt show starts Friday Library holds Soup Night, author talk The 24th annual Coastal Hills Art Tour and Quilt Show will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at various loca- tions in Willamina. This year, more than 20 artists and crafters from the West Valley will have items for sale. The Coastal Hills Quilters will put on their 16th annual quilt show. Ad- mission is free. Dallas Public Library is hosting Soup Night Thurs- day at 6 p.m., with guest au- thor Maggie Stuckey. Everyone is invited to sample soups and learn about how “Soup Nights” have become a new way to bring neighbors and com- munities together. An Oregon author, Stuckey will share stories of Soup Night groups all across the country with tips on starting your own Soup Night. She will also talk about how she devel- oped the concept for her book “Soup Night: Recipes for Creating Community Around a Pot of Soup,” her two other books, and how she found the perfect publishers. Ducks or Beavers afghan at library The Friends of the Inde- pendence Public Library will host a raffle of a University of Oregon Ducks afghan, beanies and a stuffed critter, or an Oregon State Universi- ty Beavers set. Pentacle opens ‘Trip to Bountiful’ Pentacle Theatre in West Salem is running “The Trip to Bountiful” starting Friday and running through Dec. 5. Written by Horton Foote and directed by Jo Dodge, the play centers around Mrs. Watts, an aging widow living with her son and daughter- in-law in three-room flat in Houston.
