OBITUARIES Theodore David LaVoie June 21, 1946 – Oct. 21, 2015 Theodore David LaVoie, 69, of Monmouth, died Oct. 21 in Monmouth. He was born to David and Joyce LaVoie in Pequot, Minn. His boyhood years were spent on farms in Pine River a n d Backus, Minn. In 1963, at the age of 17, his f a m i l y moved to Falls City. Two years later the f a m i l y moved to the Pedee area. The rest of his life was spent in the home he purchased on Kerber Road. Ted spent most all of his working life in a log truck, which is what he thoroughly enjoyed. He began his career driving log truck for Mosier, and then in March of 1976 he joined CG Hall Trucking Inc. He worked there until June 22, 2015, when he was forced to retire because of his health. He enjoyed his work and co-workers and consid- ered them as part of his fam- ily. Ted served his country in the Army in Korea from De- cember 1968 to July 1970. Ted loved his family and his work. He was a humble and very friendly man. He had a love for cats. He was preceded in death by his sis- ter, Kathleen Collins. Survivors include his wife Kathy of Monmouth; son, D a v i d L a Vo i e ( C o n n i e Lukawitz) of Monmouth; stepchildren, Stephen Car- doza of Harlan and Nicole Ramsey of Montana; sisters, Merrilou (Steven) Gilmore of College Place, Wash., Sharon LaVoie of Salem, and Dar- lene (Jeff) Strand, and Patty (Rick) Hurt all of Dallas; brothers, Joe (Diana) LaVoie of La Pine, and Donald (Brenda) LaVoie of Mon- mouth; one grandson; and a large extended family. Lee DeSaulnier April 16, 1930 – Oct. 22, 2015 Pastor Lee DeSaulnier, 85, of Dallas died Thursday in Salem. Lee served as pastor at the Pedee Evangelical Church from 1992 until he retired in 1995. Service is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Dallas Al- liance Church. Visitation is Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Interment will be at Womer Cemetery in Pedee. To send an online tribute: www.dallastribute.com. ‘Critter’ Charles ‘Charlie’ Delbert Peterson May 18, 1959 – Oct. 15, 2015 “Critter” Charles “Charlie” Delbert Peterson, 56, of Falls City died Oct. 15 in Falls City. He was born in Sacramen- to, Calif., to Denver Ray and Irene Neuhauser Peterson. Critter worked for Whites and Rexius Trucking Com- panies as a mechanic and did a lot of work on the side with automobiles and mo- torcycles. He lived up the Santiam Pass on the McKen- zie River, which he loved very much, before moving to Falls City 10 years ago. He was past president and member of the High Waller Race Team (NASCAR). John Penn Letterman Nov. 30, 1927 – Oct. 20, 2015 John Penn Letterman, 87, of Dallas, formerly of Falls City, died Oct. 20 in Dallas. He was born in Falls City to William Penn and Marian Hope Bennett Letterman. He lived in Falls City most of his life until moving to Dallas five years ago. He served his country in the Army from October of 1950 to August 1956 and was dis- charged as a p r i va t e first class. He married Dorothy L o u i s e Cuatt on July 3, 1959, in Falls City. Together, they were members of the Falls City Christian Church. John worked on the green chain at the Ostrom Lumber Mill in Pedee and also at the Atlas Lumber Mill in Falls City and retired in 1979. He enjoyed working puz- zles and word-find puzzles. John was a hard working husband and father. Jaki Bechtold Dec. 26, 1934 – Oct. 19, 2015 Jaki Bechtold, 80, of La Pine, formerly of Salem, died in Bend on Oct. 19. She was born in Portland to David and Bobbie Blettel. Jaki was raised in Mon- terey, Calif., and graduated from high school in Yreka, Calif. Jaki married Herold Bechtold in the Dallas Evan- gelical Church on July 3, 1955. They lived in Valsetz for three years at Russell’s Sunshine Camp. They lived in Dallas for one year before settling in Salem where they lived for more than 50 years. They re- tired to La Pine in 1996. While in Salem, Jaki and Herold were active in the Brooks Assembly of God Church and also the Peoples Church for m a n y years. She enjoyed playing the organ. Jaki was very proud of her Chris- tian faith and lived for teaching chil- d re n f r o m e l e m e n t a r y through high school about Jesus Christ. She was instrumental in starting Good News Clubs in churches around Oregon. Jaki was a great storyteller, enjoyed artwork and was an accomplished painter. Jaki was involved in paint- ing snowboards for the an- nual Dirksen Derby at Mt Bachelor. This has been a fundraiser for Jaki’s grandson Tyler Ek- lund, an upstart renowned snowboarder who suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury in 2006 during a competi- tion that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Survivors include her hus- band, Herold Bechtold of La Pine; daughters, Debbie Roose of California, Sue (Mike) Ek- lund of Bend, and Charlotte Bechtold of Monmouth; and three grandchildren. Celebration of Jaki’s life is Wednesday (today) at 1 p.m. at Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. Private interment will be at Dallas Cemetery.
