Polk County Sports Polk County Itemizer-Observer • October 7, 2015 11A Jacobson: Helping kids was lifelong goal Continued from Page 10A During his career, Jacob- son coached football, track and field and tennis, wrestling and basketball from 1947 to 1962. “We didn’t have a lot of coaches in those days,” Kunke said. “He and I coached everything. We had a janitor who had been a professional wrestler and he coached wrestling. That was the extent of the coaching staff. He was pretty busy.” Jacobson was known for making the best of situa- tions from helping to lead the football program to hosting track meets. “The very first year we were coaching (in 1964), we didn’t have a track,” former Dallas track and field coach Paul Ward said. “Lake Os- wego came up with two bus- loads. There weren’t any fences and they walked all the way across the football field looking for the track. We had a grass track at the time. When they found out they had to run on grass, they were all discombobulated.” Jacobson’s contributions while working with the school district were many, and Jacobson didn’t stop at coaching. He also served as athletic director for a num- ber of years. No matter what his role was, Jacobson provided a role model for all his stu- dents to follow. “I never once saw him lose his temper or lose his cool,” Steve Villwock said. Villwock, a 1960 graduate of Dallas High, played quarter- back from 1957-59 and ran track in 1960 under Jacob- FALLS CITY ROUNDUP son. “He had a good rapport with the players. Everyone liked him.” Throughout Jacobson’s career with the Dallas School District, his focus was on one thing: helping students. His impact on those lives he touched was immense and he kept in contact with many of his students long after he retired, Villwock said. More importantly, he taught life lessons and helped his student-athletes become better people. “He took everything in stride,” Villwock said. “He was always very positive. ... I was always impressed with the man as a coach and a person.” See Jacobson’s obituary and service notice on Page 6A. CENTRAL ROUNDUP Volleyball downs Boys soccer defeats Dallas C.S.
