Contest Powwow on tap Itemizer-Observer staff report GRAND RONDE — One of the largest powwows in the Pacific Northwest will kick off in Grand Ronde on Friday. The Grand Ronde Tribe is hosting its annual Con- test Powwow at the Uyxat Powwow Grounds, 9390 Highway 22 (Hebo Road), Friday through Sunday. In 2014, the event at- tracted 260 Native Ameri- can dancers to compete for prize money — more than $35,000 total — in 20 categories. New this year, drummers also will be competing for prize money, $20,000 in all. The Contest Powwow is open to the public, with plenty of space to view the grand entries and dances. Host drums will be Bad Soul. Registration begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, fol- lowed by the first grand entry at 7 p.m. The tribal royalty coronation also Celebrate bees at Left Coast Cellars Left Coast Cellars, 4225 N. Pacific Highway (99W ), Rickreall, will host a celebra- tion from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in honor of World Honey Bee Day. The event includes honey extraction demonstrations, beekeeping education and the debut of the winery’s 2014 Queen Bee Bubbly sparkling wine. The event is free. A selection of her photos and mixed media pieces will be on display at the library, highlighting her unique use of abstraction and the realism of her pho- tographic images. Shuford specializes in candid portraits and abstract mixed media work, but clas- sic cars are among her fa- vorite subjects, as well. Even though her photography background has largely fo- cused on children’s portraits and sports photography, her photos exhibit her sense of wonder and imagination. VBS at Dallas First Christian Church Monmouth library to celebrate 20 Dallas First Christian Church will present Vaca- tion Bible School from Aug. 17 to 21.
