A good many conscientious people, in looking about them anil seeing the evil Hint abounds, ate actuated with n sincere desire to right these evils. The shortest way, many think or rather arc mis led to think, is by taking recourse to law. Stop men from swearing stop them from profaning the Sabbath by law and you have the great bonanza for a great deal ol the wickedness and looseness ol society. Now, nothing is better for a nation or a community than arc good, wise laws and the proper ob servance of the same. But before we moke a subject the concern of law, it is always in place to have a clear understanding as to what arc proper subjects lor human legislation. The thing, which above all others, cannot and must not be coutroted by human law, either directly or indirectly, is the individual con science. The most dire' calamity has always followed every attempt to harness the conscience of man. It reacts disastrously both upon the agressor and upou the sufferer. God alone is the sole arbiter of the human conscience "and he has not given his honor to onother." It is true that men have often in the past, and dq at the present time. overstep the sacred precincts which it is not even permitted for angels to tread, nevertheless the hiehest development of the character, the ultimate God-like attainment which the Creator desires man to realize, demands in language unmistakable.
