Mr. Tongue's committee assign ments are something of an index to Ills standiug both in congress and with the republican organization. When he received his appointment on the river and harbor committee he had been iu congress but one term. California had never had the position aud neither had Wash ington, fioth were applicants for it and both were strongly supported. At the same time Oregon had in the senate a member on the com mittee on commerce, and California case and asked congress for a 'gen eral pension act iu behalf of these men. A storm of opposition greeted his first attempt to get this before congress, and there was a general feeling that there was not only no merit in the case, but it would be a flagrant injustice to grant this pension. Mr. Tongue has now converted the entire con gress to his view of justice of the act, but there still lingers a doubt iu the minds of many as to the pru dence of a general pension for stnte troops. Neither this nor any other government has ever granted a general pension to any but federal troops, and these troops having been called by the stnte, it h argued W. W. Withers, the present democratic sheriff of Lane county and nominee on that ticket for re election, is a personal friend of the editor 01 tins paper, in tins con nection it is with pleasure that we say that he has made a good officer. However no roan has a life lease on any office and it is not to be pre sumed for a moment that Mr. Withers has any idea of a life lease on the office he now holds. In cases of this kind when nn equally good and efficient man is put up, as is the case in the matter of A. J. Johnson, the republican nominee, it follows that party lines should be respected. While Mr. Withers has made a good officer it is a well known fact that be has made no better record than has Mr. Johnson, years ago, iu the same office. This being the case the republicans of this County are politically obligated to support him, Mr. Johnson is the regular nominee of the repub lican party, and standing as he does, without peer in tbe matter of executive ability and character, it is the duty of the republicans to see that he is the next sheriff of Lane county.
