Trusting the club will meet wi h mm h success, we are, Very truly, yours. K r- ney & GrlMer. A warm baseball game ts expected to day between rhe Fort Stevens nine and th local teem. Following is ih maki-up of the local nine, In the order of batting: Dan Allen, seoond base; Fletcher, catch er; Ross, left field; Thlel, right field; Giodali, short sum; Pogue, first base; Painter, center field; Marion, third base Crosby, prtchor. Substitutes, George M Bride, James Bufflngion and Wed Allen. This morning a steamer will be sent down to bring up the Fort Stevens nine and while in the city they will be the a-ueirts of etie Astoria nine. There was some betting last night on the outcome of the game, but odds were about even, and a hotly contested game is expected. The national game is a fitting diversion ' for our national holiday, when the band plays national airs and the people regale themselves with the national drink. Reports from over the country do not Indicate that there was any general ob servance of Santiago day yesterday. Here In Astoria It was accorded about the same observance as Is given labor day, the closing of the public offl es and banks being the only events connoted with the day. Business of all kinds was carried on as usual, though the mer chants did not make the large sals that they usually do on the dny previous to the Fourth. The reason for this falling off In trade was that the pe''P'e out of town got the Idea that the storeswould all be closed and so did not come to town. There Is not much likelihood of Santiago day becoming a national holi day, for people do not look upon It as an epoch day or turning point In tho Span ish war any more than was the storming of San Juan hill or the capture of Ponce. As compared to the crushing dofeat Dewey gave the Spaniards at Manila, the destruction of Cavera's fleet was not nearly so great an event, either in the chances of danger the American were under, or of the eff'Wts on the war, and the world at large. The unfortunate and unmanly controversy between the Samp son and Schley factions has been a lead ing factor In taking the enthusiasm out of Americans when called on to celebrate the day. The celebration for theFouth coming on the succeeding day is against any great demonstration on Santiago day, for th Americans are not like the Chinese, capable ol continuing a celebra- tlon an indefinite number of day.
