Instead of KOO.OVO, as srreat a sun a that doubtless seems to the Independ ent, and really ls. the Astoria contention, baaed upon the statistic of wheat ex. port from the Pacific coast, as pub. llshtd in the One;;nian, hi that the total a vint; to farmer would approximte 15.000,000. The Astorlan can show and has shown, by the OregoMans own fig ure, that the saving on this year's crop would exceed t4.0UO.0Q0. With the larger hlpment that would undoubtedly go out of the Columbia river. If loaded at Astoria, It to entirely reasonable to put the annual saving at t3.000. or over. Another err-r f the Independent is in suggesting as one of the factors in the Astoria siiua;ion the relative cost of rail as contrasted with inland ship navi gation. The Independent Is mi'led into thl error by the frant c efforts of the Oregonlan to divert ihs usslon from ..ie real merits of the case through frequent assertions that whear can be sent down the river In fhip bottoms cheaper than by the A. & C. railway. Every well-informed person In Astoria knows that 4his statement ls not true: but since it does not concern the real questinn at Issue, the Astorlan has refused over and ovtr again to be drawn Into Its discussion. What Astoria contends is that the rail roads Bhou'.d deliver wheat at the mou:h of the Columbia river at the same rate charged ts take rt from Interior common point over the mountains to Seattle. We argue, for Instance, that if wh -at can be carried from Pendleton to Seattle, over 5,000 feet of mountain grade, anJ fully 108 mile further, at the same rate charged by the O. R. & N. to send it over It down grade to its own steamers t Portland for trans-shipment to San Francleco (at an additional charge to the farmer of I2.M a ton for the water carriage) the O. R. & N. can make a fair profit by continuing the wheat on the down grade to AKtoria. only 100 miles further from Portland AND EIOHT MILES NEARER THAN TO SEATTLE for the same rate; and that If th' wheat were so delivered here i: could be loaded dlrectiy into export ships at a charter rate so much lower than that charged at Portland there would be no profit In taking It to San Francisco. BUT THAT IT WOULD BRING NEARLY, IF NOT QUITE. THE SAN FUANCISf'O PRICE AT THE MOUTH OF THE COL UMBIA. This Is the Astoria proposition. The Independent's attention Is also called to the last published statistics of the quantity and value of wheat ship, ments from Pacific coast ports. This statement can be found In the Orego nlan of April 4. iSM, and wag republished In the Astorlan. It shows that during the month of March this year wheat brci'ght three cent a bushel more at Seattle than at Portland, and 1H4 cents more at San Francisco than at Portland, and that on the shipment made foreign ouO of the Columbian basin In 4he month of test March alone the farmer loat nearly 00,000 because Portland la the Tho Kind You Have Ahvnys ltimjrht, nnil whloh hit bocn iu uso for oit SO jours, lias borne Iho signature f nnil lias boon mmlo utulVr Mh por- jfZftf-?--3- nnt Mijorvblon sltico lt lofauoy. 4ocAi( Allow i ono to dwt'lvo joti tn tbl AH Countorfotts Imitation ami Snbstltuto-H nr but V.x ttvrlmonts that trltlo with ami tiulanr tho health of Infants ami Children Usperietiit' autalnst Kxperhncut.
