Every argument that can be Invented by O. R. & N. employes is cited as evidence :hat the new steamer line cannot be male to pay. Ordinarily when capital'sls offer to Invest money In a state or community they find ready and hearty welcome. This is particularly the case with those who undertake to Increase the transpor tation facilities. Hammond is the only man who has brought a dollar of outside capital Into Oregon for Investment in five years, and vet his enterprises have been ridiculed and misrepresented by th' Portland papers from the beginning, and the man himself openly vilified. Such a spectacle would not be tolerated In a decent community, and It serves to il lustrate the character of Portland busi ness men and advertise that town throughout the country as a place where enterprise Is not appreciate,! ani foreign Investments would not be safe. The very shame of the presence of such a class of newspapers in any other white community would incite riot and might lead to the lynching of the miscreants who run them. The di.-trra.e o! such a proceedings will be felt and pser.ttd by every honest man in Oregon. SOME GOVERNMENT STATISTICS. No one !n Portland will pretend that city t. a greater ?eaiort than San Kran. Cisco, but very many pe",pr have been hoodwinked by statements systematically appearing In the local columns of the Oregcnlan Into believing that the shipping Interests of the Northwest are stejiVIy concentrating on Portland. It seems In credible that any Intelligent peron could be Imposed upon In this manner, but when It Is reflected that no olher paper than the Ong-mian Is read in Portland such a lack of information is not u::a, . countable. The Astorlan has repeatedly (liven :he t'dltur cf the Oregon'an credit for having better sfisse. He ih'roughly tin. dcrstands ihe c 'mmerclal tituut on of the Northwest, and HE KNOWS THAT PORTLAND IS LOSING GKOI'ND EVERY DAY IN THE CONTEST FOR COMMERCIAL SCPREMACY. AND THAT WITHOUT BETTER SEAPORT FACILITIES. SUCH AS CAN ONLY HE REALIZED THROUGH THE DE VELOPMENT OP ASTORIA PORT LAND WILL IN FIVE YEARS EN. TIRELY CEASE TO FIGURE IN THE GOVERNMENT STATISTICS AS AN IMPORTING POINT. The editor of the Oregonlan also knows that, with the ex ception of the wheat which finds its way down a water level railroad and goea out In grain or in the form of flour on the few ealling vessels that the O. R. & N. Company succeeds In dragging up the 110 miles of river to her wharves. PORTLAND HAS ABSOL1TELY NO EXPORTS WHATEVER. The gravity of the situation Is so well realised by the editor of the Ore gonlan that. In Kplte of the vigilance of the men wbo control the policy of his paper, he ' now and then breaks forth In a stirring blast like his "Matter of Chn'ce" editorial, which, In any com. munlty not monopoly-eursed like Port lar.4, would arouse public excitement to AYcCcLiWcftcpardtionforAs- 1 1 Sinuiaiiits uh. nvuiiiKuu s" tfcg the Sioiruu.'ks ami Uawcls cf ... 1. lYomotesTMitcslion-Chcctful-ncssandrVstConUins neiuvr Opiwii.Morphinc or Mu'.cr J. Such statistics as these are never ptiM'sned In tne Ungonlan. The sole effort cf the mercenaries who control Its local columns Is bent to the end of deceiving Instead of enlighten!": Its readers. There can be no doubl what ever that if the people of Portland coo.d be shown the truth as to their emmer. da! predicament, nothing not ewn the Influence of all the local writers on the Oregonian would suffice to restrain the uprising of all classe In their own de fens and a taking of the situation In hand for themselves.
