There Is ; etudy that Portland's common point ; but ol)e explanation-Portland people are j with Seattle and Tacoma Is based upon the mountain rates of the Sound rail- f roads. Portland gives up her advantage in railway grades, and even In distance, for what she calls an "equality" with the 8oundi aities. Was any economic proposition ever so ab aurd? Instead of leveling the railway ratea of the Northwest down to the basis of the water grade into Portland, the rates nave been raised by the railroad cioirtbLne ( standard. to the Puget sound mountain Tills is the way Portland is f "equalized" with Tacoma and Seattle, to the Immense loss and injury of every producer and trader in Portland and the matchless Columbian basin. Suppose the Oregonlan was fulfilling its self-appointed and loudly boasted mission of g uartluig even Portlanda Interests to say nothing of the state at large, by which it is mainly supported would that paper be likely to remain silent under such a condition of affaiirs? It Is very doubtful if fifty business men In Portland under. Stand th situation. The Oregonlan has never explained it, but continually prints columns of misrepresentations concerning it. Portland people never see any paper but the Oregonlan, and the syndicate of monopolists who are responsible for this "sell out" of the city's interests have such a control of the situation that they will not permit an opposition paper to live in Portland. It la the strangest thing In all history that Portland busi ness men are so blind. Do they never think, study or reason? Of course they know something is the matter with "General Prosperity's" arrival, but the Oregonlan tells them he is simply de layed on the road, and will surely reach Portland "next spring" or a little later, and thus they are pacified. The railroads would not make so much money, of course, by just the amount they might have to contribute as a Just differential to the Astoria branch, but the whole Northwest would be better off by many millions annually. Thousands of women suffer in this way and do not recognize the cause, or if tbey do understand their condition, neglect it rather than submit to the obnoxious exam inations and local treatment insisted upon by the average physician. Dr. Pierce'e Favorite Prescription is a wonderful medi cine for women who suffer in this way. It does away with the necessity for these try ing ordeals, and may be used in the privacy of the home. It acts directly on the deli cate organs concerned, and makes them strong, vigorous and healthy. It banishes the discomforts of the expectant period and makes baby's advent easy and almost pain less. It transforms weak, nervous, petulant invalids into happy wives and mothers. Thousands of women have testiSed, over ineir own signatures, to this fact. The " Favorite Prescription " may be procured from any good medicine dealer. Any wom an who will write to Dr. R. V. Pierce, Buf falo, N.
