Besides the Hawaiian cable, Astoria should also have a naval station and a government dry dork. The Columbia basin Is the geographical! center of the PaclAa coast of North America, It Is the natural highway of the world's com merce between Orient and Occident because, outside of Its central location, the Columbia river tffords the only pass throuKh the t'.-".:: runse from southern California to northern Wash. Ington. It has one of the finest river en trances In the world, made so by a two million dollar Jetty. Its harbor Is unequalled In the west, and beyond all supplies the s'ne qua mm fur a naval station fre,h water. It Is superior t Puget sound In two particulars, besides It central location. It has fresh water at low tide and does not border upon the t erritory of a foreign nation. As to San Francisco. It is conceded the naval sta tion should not be located there. And as between the Sound and the Columbia's mouth there can be no comparison. Of course the location of a naval station here necessitates a good dry dock; and these two will put our harbor and Jetty Under the special care of the United States. Were It not for the insane Jeal. ousy of Portland there would be no 'oubt about our securing both the naval station and the dry dock. The Astorian's pamphlet, "The Seaport Problem of the Pucltic Northwest." is creating a, deep Impression upon Portland thinkers. If It Shall make them friends of Astoria It will not only force an "open railway " which was Irs logical purpose, but It will also secure us th naval station and dry dock. Our senators and members of con. greea should be supplied with a number of copies of that pamphlet to aid them In their efforts on this Una.
