K -To the Ed itor: The lxi?inn!ng o( the reient cn-trovc-rfy in rec.ird to the purposes of the cit ieiis of A.stoiia oriiniied with a r. g lar corresjiondem of the Oreuonlan and was sent to that paper in response to di rect orders front Its marwsrer. Hardly a person In Astor.a at that time approved tha sentiments expressed, or tne mana.r of launching them. Developments sime that time have, by the action of the O. R. & N. Company In 'ofuslna; the Just claim ( f ;ba common pol -t rat on lumljer, whUh it la claimed was dictated by prominent business men of Portlar.d. caused feeling of resentment and de termination to rebel against such Injus tice. It Is thought that the managers of the Oregonian became frightened at the wind and bluff of the Interviewer, and at the instigation of the O. R. & N. Company and the wheat pool of Portland, built "a man of a: raw," In assuming to be the friend of the producers of Oregon and Washington. By distorting lis own, and the Astor.un's statermuts. it has led some intelligent persons to believe that the people of Astoria and the newspapers of this city oppose the improvement of tne Columbia and Willamette rivers. Every good citizen of AstorU, I assure you, looks forward even more anxiously thin you, to the day when steamer and barges loaded w.th lumber, wood, fish, salt, coai sjx! so forth, will dally leave the wharves of Astoria for Eugene, Lewlston and all the way ports, returning Ivaded with wheat, flour, wool, cattle, ores, granite ami fruit or all kinds. Until this can be done, neither eastern, southern nor west ern Origon can ba fully develuped. As torlans deaire now. and ulways have worked faithfully for the Improvements of the rivers and harbors of our state; to i permanantly Improve the mouih of the Columbia river, so that the largest ships and cheapest carriers could en;er the Columbia river at all times; to foctire ihe permanent improvement of the Columbia and Wll;amelte rivers in a manner that will benefit the whole state; to develop tli nitural advun.ages thtreby, benetltlni ourselves and the people tributary to the Columbia river. Astorians never opposed any improve ment of the rivers until emissaries were sent to Washington about eight years ago to divert appropriations for the mouth of the Columbia river and the Cas cades to the deepening of the ship chan nel for the 'benefit of Portland. The in terest of Astoria, Portland or the Astoria Sl Columbia River Railroad Is not the only consideration. What the producers of th Columbia and Willamette river valleys should know Is: Why wheat In Poriland la worth from 6 to 111 cents per bushel 1 I less than It Is In San Francisco. Why la It necessary to ship nearly one-sixth of the wheat sent out of the Columbia river to San Francisco by the O. R. & N. Com pany's steamers, and there put on smaller Bhlps for Europe, then come to the Col umbia? Why the O. R. & N. Company charge cents per bushel down a wnter level grade, from Walla Walla, 2 miles, or Pendleton, 231 miles, to Portland, when the. Northern Pacific Railroad charges the same price per bushel over the Cas cade mountains from Walla Walla, l miles, or Pendleton, 308 miles, to Tacoma, or 8cattle. 351 miles? it Is 331 miles from Pendleton und 343 miles from Walla Walla to Astoria, wstcr level grade. Is not the O. R. & N. Company paid enough money to deliver wheat products from Walla Walla and Pendleton to As tor;; over a route that one locomotive can pull more than two cars to one that the Northern Pacific cun pull from Wal:a Wall or Pendleton to Tacoma or Seattle, a longer distance? ' ' Then why, If the dlstunces and physical condition of the country are stated cor rectly, should the producers pay any more to have their wheat brought, in ships or otherwise, frcra Portland than to Astoria? Is It necessary to pay the O, R. & N. Company eatra to tow ship to Portland and back to Astcria, or to csrry Oregon whoit In ainanuhlps at I refits or more per bufche to 8a Knim-lec. of to allow the wheat and waretoous pool In Port land to pay foreign ship $1 50 to U mora per ton than wheat can be shipped from Astoria to Liverpool? Tha above are scgn of llie question that tha Aa torlan has repeatedly asked the Oregon Ian. That paper haa nH answered them except to claim that we opposed the Im provement of tha whole river. Will you kindly publish this and sot Our' p.oplt right? J. 11. D. OKAY.
