There will be other speakers on the occasion, intro duced by Mr. Judson. and from the tone of the letters below, it Is mi. re than prob able that aid In the project will be ren dered by the Oregon state agricultural college, which has already taken a deep Interest In the question of flax growing hre. We have writt.n th-m concerning the matter, hu: by the en closed postal you will note th-lr unsw-r to our inquiry. It seems that the flax has n it arrived at the mills, prbably has been delayed In transit. We sent the flax on one of M-ssrs. Robert Stewart A 8ons vessels last fall, but probably the transfer at some English port has caused the delay. but no doubt they will receive the same sooner or later. We are very much Interested In the cdmlng report, as we feel contld. nt that this county Is fairly well adapted to the cultivation of flax. Of course this first experiment may not turn out as good as the second or third would. We ourselves are very much Interested In any agricultural experiment, and should there be anything of which we can be'of value to you. please Inform us. Wa hear that Mr. Judson (Industrial agent of the O. R. N. We would much like to have the Ore. gon experimental station take a hand In this matter, as will Insure the complete success of the same, as the dairy busi ness Is one of the leading agricultural departments in this county. Very truly, H. T. FRENCH. j A THREATENED DANCER. i Astoria, June 3. Editor Astorian: Mr. j John Kopp has recently called my alt'-n-' tlon to what, It seems to me, Is a very j dangerous) weakness In our commonly I siint'OSf d very effective city water supply ! system for tho extinguishment of fires I more particularly In that portion of tho j city extending from O'lirlcn'g Hotel f ast I ward to tho Adair line. It seems that the large water main, in stead of being laid upon the ground or beach, where it would be practically out of danger, Is laid along and suspended upon wooden supports underneath and at tached to the wooden roadways composing Exchange street and Franklin avenue, at a height generally of from c-Usht to twelve feet from the ground. During the recent fire the street near the Intersection of TwcMy-cfghl and Franklin avenue was on fire for several blocks and the file reached wit IHn ten feet of the wooden water main supports. Had tho lire once crossed the street to lae south ll would have Iven undermined, the pipe allowed to fall and break Joints with Its own weight, the water eeeape and every hvd mat rendered useless. It Is aw ml to t Mnk of what might follow such a calnin It v . Inn such may happen at any time.
