Pursuant to Us policy for several years past tha American Protective Tariff League has undertaken a poll of the in dustrial establishments of the Fnlted States with a view to obtaining trust worthy Information ns to the condition of American labor after eight months of protection as contrasted with Its condi tion during: the corresponding period fol lowing the enactment of Ihe Wilion-iSor-man low tariff and no tariff law of 14. Accordingly the reeiuest for Information has includcil these two paints: Average number of hands .nip! vcl during the month of March. and Nv Amount of payroll during the month of March. W, and In order to Injure the utmost freedom i In the matter of replies and hence the utmost aci tiracy f Information, the League has In every rise given the fol lowing pledge: The information usked will be held as strictly confidential, snd In no case will the amount of wage be divulged in con nection with your firm. The returns thus far submitted show some extraordinary results. The firs! Inquiry cards were addressed to parlies doing business In the state of Oregon, and In response there have been received 10S reports, representing thirty-three dif ferent classes of InJustry. A summary of the reports from the state of Oregon Is as folows: Hand employed Number1 of establishments re porting 1"2 Number of hands employed during March. The latest authentic and a. curate re turn as to the manufacturing industries of Oregon are those of the el. -v. nth en sus of At that time l.'l'l establish ments reported, with a total capital of t-'3.122.Al; number of employees. RTi'v The eight years that have elapsed since IfW have been years of splendid progress and development for Oregon, barring the four vears of deprsxion and industrial paralysis that followisl the fr.e trad folly of 1M-i7. There has been a large Increase In population and Ind istrial activity wherew ith to measure tlu- enor- , mo, is Innelits that have follow-d t ba restorutlon of the American pollej of J proti tries llon to American labor and Indus- i In !! a vastly dltT-P nt showing was ; made by Oregon In the investigation linn made by Un- American Protective Tariff League covering the conditions existing In July of that year, after two years of Wilson-Oormunl.'-m. as com pared with July of 1M'2. under the Me Klnl'T tariff. It was then found that by tho sixteen establlnhments reporting there were employed In 1SI2 521 hands, and In 1N9(J this number had fallen to 210 hands employed, n decrease of more than 50 per cent. If to the great gain In wages and indus trlnl production shown for Oregon by the contrnst between March, 1S9,", under low tariff and no tariff, and March, 1S0S, under the Dingley tariff, be added the advance in value of farm products and farm property nnd the general advance In val ues throughout that flourishing state, the showing for protection In Oregon would have to be reckoned by tens or mil lions of dollars. On Hie first Monday In June of this year Oregon elects two representative In the I'nltcd States congress. This will afford the people of thai state the oppor tunity for an expression of their views concerning ft federal policy that has wrought the splendid results indicated n the returns summarised above The "fiends of protection throughout the Til, ted States will be Interest, d In h ing from On : n on this -nit'oct.
