c3 ,5 '"" Mt gaftjj t0a. J. H.MANSELL, ? K ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY.- -. . DECEMBER 22. 1883. City and County Official Paper. Fr.oii ono point iu Missouri over one million cottonwood saplings have been snipped this year to Ne braska and Iowa to bo planted on the tree claims. At the recent fire in Boston it -was noticed that the only building -vrhich really stubbornly resisted the on slaught of the flames waj one, the windows of which were provided with iron shutters. There is one 'New Yorker who should be contented with his lot It is one at the corner of Madison ave nue and Twenty-third street. He bought it for $50,000 and has just disposed of it for $350,003. Of the CCOsiilors now on board the receiving-ship Vermont at Brooklyn, all but about forty are said to be Americans. They are destined for the new cruisers Baltimore and Charles ton and the gunboat Petrel. Tun death of Woods in u prize fight at Butte, Mont, has created intense excitement Gallagher, his opponent, has suffered the amputation of his left leg, and it is feared he too will die from the effects of the brutal combat. Those managing the affair are cross ing the state line. "KEEP YOUR EYE ON PASCO." How The Famous Phrase Orijinafed.i The fire3 advertised Spokane Falls, Seattle and Ellensburg. Proctor Knott advertised Doluth. A well turned phrase has brought Pasco into notice east, west north and south. "Who is this Pasco," asked a Canada paper, "that it should be watched?" "A banker in Washington," answered another Dominion paper, "who the people fear will come to our country with the funds." "The dark horse of the BQpubli cans,' says a prominent eastern polit cal paper. "The thoroughbred of the west" says a sporting paper, ''that will con test the next derby with Spokane, and win, if indications are any index to tbe future.' -'TaseoLaas Colonel Muncy of the Headlight, "is" the coming city of the great inland empire. It must be so; nothing can prevent it." "Keep your eye on Pasco." This' phrase has an ignoble origin. A drunken man had a grudge against the editor of the Headlight. He abused roundly, threatened with everything evil, and wound up by saying, I will keep my eye on you." The editor endured it with patience, Christian fortitude characteristic of his craft, and then replied, "Don't keep your eye on me; keep your eye on Pasco." The boys about town took it up. They joshed the drunken man summarily and hurled the, to him, obnoxious phrase at him hundreds of times. Tiie phrase took, because, the town by-word, got into the papers by advertisement and paragraph, went around the world, and. now everybody "keeps his eye on Pasco." A QUAKER'S DOZEN. Eichard Stejc, the wellknown proprietor of the Quaker Dairy, No. 30 Ellis St., San Fran tisco, last -vreei; sent the following letter to tho Edwin "V. Joy Co. "My family have been taking Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparflla now for months with splendid results. Our ex perienco has boon, that aftci taking it reguhciy for a short time and getting the system Etarted rijht, an occasional dose thereafter keeps the sys tem in -perfect condition. A peculiarity of your vegetable compound is, ..hat it does not lose its effect, but seems to accomplish the sane results continually. As a liver and bowel rcgu1 ator and corrective it is perfection. We would not bo without it In fact I have just bought a dozen bottles to get the re duced price." A. M. Itowc of 523 Jones street S. r., also writes that It has been his habit f oj years to awake in the mornings with a head ache and an exhausted feeling; butsincothc first bottle ho has had no return.
