A manufacturer of some paten t com- j pounci or otuer came miu uie ibuuiu tory of a chemist with a hottle con taining an unwholesome looking mixture.-41! would crive $50'' he said, "to know what would make the water and tho oil "in this emulsion separate." The chemist looked at it. "Very well," be said, '"write your check and for that price I am willing to t41 you what will make the water and the oil separate." The visitor hesi tated a moment and tbon wrote hiH check for the sum named. The chem ist carefully deposited it in his pocketbook, and then quietly dropped into the liquid a pinch of common salt. Instantly the water and oil separated, and whether the client was satisfied or not, ho had got what ho wanted and be had paid his own price for it. Electric Power. New York exchanges call attention to some new inventions in eleotrical apparatus, for which startling claims are made. They are the invention of a French electrician named P. K. F. d'Huiny, and were recently exhibited in that city. It is asserted that they do away entirely with the need for steam engines and dynamos in gen erating the electric current. According to tho papers "a peculiar kind of bat tery is used, in which zinc is re placed by a certain alloy, the exact composition of which is kept secret, but which i3 said to be almost inde structible." Among those interested in the enterprise are several New York capitalists. In this age of rapid electrical progress, one cannot safely express incredulity even about such an innovation as is here described. If the claims of this inventor are justified, the cheapening of tho cost of generating electricity will of course bo considered. jBiicIilen'Armea Salvo.
