Is Kansas, as in Iowa, there is a formidable movement to substitute lugli license for prohibition. Eight thousand operatives are thrown out of employment by the awful fire which devasted Lynn. It was the elevator shaft that -was the weakness of the magnificent struc tures bnnied in Boston Thanksgiving Day. - The report of the register of the treasury shows that only L3G per cent of our national bonds are held abroad. The president has announced him self as opposed to allowing one or iro men to control the appointments from a state. The only question as to the Ohio senatorship seems to be whether it will be disposed of at public auction or at priTatcsale Sesator Dolph will introduce a bill to repeal the pre-emption and timber-culture acts and to amend the homestead and desert land laws. The canal commissioners of the Xicaraguaa government, express ijreat satisfaction at the work thus far accomplished by the expedition from the "United States. One of the inducements to the or ganization of Alaska, as a territory, is that the mileage of the delegate to cDngress, would make him the best naid member of the body. A TBiAii has begun in Gallicia against sixty-five men for fleecing em igrants during ten years past. Among the accused were persons of all ranks, the firt on the list being a district governor. The Gallician peasants are so blmple that such a device as a little alarm clock served to telephone to the "emperor of America," who was regularly asked whether he would accept a particular emigrant; and a favorable answer was always paid for high! j. Three hundred and fifty thousand six hundred and sixty-six persons are now under sentence in the German Empire for offenses against the law. Sixty-one thousand eight hundred and six of these offended against the state, religion and the public peace; 131,070 against the person, 152,632 against property, 552 were sentenced for 'insnlting majesty," 482 for arson, 473 for bribery, 25S for offenses against the anti-socialist law, and 969 for adulterating food. Hov. much of life is wasted in un finished work! Many a man uses up his lime in splendid beginnings. The labor devoted to commence ten things and leave them useless -would finish five of them, and make them profit able and useful. Finish your work. Life is brief: time is short. Stop be ginning forty things? and go finish four. Put patient, persistent toil into the matter, and be assured, one complete undertaking will yield your self more pleasure and the world more profit than a dozen fair plans of which people say, "This man began to build and was not able to finish." It is melancholy to read of Nevada, abandoned alike by rain, railroads and miners. There are towns in the state that used to have a population of 15,000. Now they have in some in stances less than a hundred. When the price of silver goes up in the world's market, when the government's gigantic irrigation scheme covers her arid valleys wiih smiling green, then Nevada will awake, like the enchanted princess, and all the scenes of merry, busy fife will be enacted o'er again, rank G. Newlands, at a banquet given to the delegates to the St Louis silver convention, said, "Nevada pro duced during the war, 200,000,000 of gold and silver. Subsequent to the ar she poured into the lap of the country- 000,000,000 more, . thereby making resumption of specie pay ments a possibility and saving the credit of the nation."' Eupepy. The Oregon Pacific railroad track is now laid sixty miles east of Albany. One thousand men are at work grad ing the road towards the summit. Only fifteen miles of unfinished work remains between the end of the track and the summit, A reward of 10,000 has been offered for the recovery of Emil Frank, the Colfax merchant, who was last seen in Spokane Falls nearly two months ago. The services of an experienced detective have been secured to wipe away the mystery. The books of city treasurer Parker, of Seattle, which upon his retirement from office August 1, were found in most inextricable confusion and show ing an apparent deficit in the funds of 14,136.46, have at last been straight ened out, with the result that the de ficit is now reduced to 10,389.47. Dr. T. T. Minor, a Seattle physician and politician, G. Morris Haller, a leading attorney, and Louis Cox, also an attorney, are supposed to have been drowned while hunting on the waters of the lower Sound. On Thanksgiving evening they left Seat tle on a hunting trip. They were to have returned home last Wednesday, and as no information of them has been secured, grave doubts are ex pressed by friends as to their safety. TIIE GOLD DOLLAR. Bangles Have Captured the Little Coin. In this speculative age little diffi culty is encountered in literally pro curing 2 for 1, if the fortunate man only happens to possess the right kind of a dollar. It was a common saying, not many years back, to speak of a conservative business man, not in clined to speculate, as being so cau tious that he would not pay more than eighty big copper cents for a smaM gold dollar Nowadays a man can walk into a Bank with a yellow gold dollar and exchange it for from L50 to 2 in white silver, red copper or crisp notes. The fair sex, as a rule, is not given to speculation. Nevertheless it has actually, unintentionally perhaps, and without malice made a corner in gold dollars. The craze for ban gles has about ended, but only for the reason that the women of America are carrying almost the entire gold dollar currency of the country upon their necks, arms, fingers and ears. On March 3, 1849, the United States mint was authorized by law to coin 1 gold pieces. The weight of the coin was to be 25.8 grains, and the degree of fineness was fixed at 900. The same year the first gold dollar was regis tered, but from the beginning it did not meet with popular favor because of its mconviently small size. Along in the fifties the coin was made of larger diameter but thinner. During the war but little gold was circulated, and upon the resumption of specio payment, the small gold coin was not received as well as the silver "cart wheel' of the same de nomination. So apparent is the ob jection to the gold dollar , as a circu lating medium, that for the past decade its coinage has virtually been suspended, except the issuance of a few special copies each year. - W'inhards Boer. How The Salmon Situation Looks There. Just now the salmon market is glut ted to an alarming extent and that fish canned is almost a drug on the market, The fact is the pack this year is the largest ever known in the history of the coast, the footings now run up to 1,800,000 cases, and it is known that other precincts are to be heard from in Alaska, which will largely swell the amount above given. There are two vessels now in north ern ports, and it is now thought that they will either bring all the balance of the Alaska salmon or give full re ports of the amount still on hand. The Alaska packers everlastingly fooled everybody by reporting a short age. The result of this was that buy ers accumulated large stocks under the impression that the supply was short, and that high prices would rule. Now they cannot get rid of their holdings. In some parts of Alaska the salmon run was small, but in others it was very large. This, coupled with the fact that a large number of canneries were built and put in operation this year there, greatly enlarged the out put. It is now claimed that the cannery men who have not sold will be sure to have some of this stock on hand two years from now. The banks, apprehending a pro tracted period of dullness in the sal mon market, now refuse to advance money on salmon as heretofore, and are calling in the loans previously made on this commodity. This has the effect of further depreciating prices. Tho Alaska canners being re mote from the markets will suffer the most from prevailing low prices, as previous to the discovery that the pack there was excessively large, most of tho Puget sound and Columbia river canners had disposed of their output. The Alaska canners, under the circumstances, will show a profit on the wrong side of the ledger this season. Seattle Press, 7. fe USEFUL INFORMATION. Tilbury Fox, M. D., the eminent medical writer, in his work" Skin Diseases," thus ac counts for the pimples so common to the face and neck. Eating too rich or too greasy food, or too hearty eating while tho ex cretory organs aro sluggish, causes in most people indigestion or a dyspopsial condition, which cauies the blood to move iluggishly, and enfeobles tho pores. The result is, that the exuding Becretions block in tho pores, which inflame, each distinct inflammation being a pimple. Dr. Fox therefore docs not prescribe " blood purifiers" so called, but a " dyspepsia cure" to be taken, to use his own words "till the dysptpsial symptoms have disappeared." Tho old idea was, that face eruptions wero caused by a " humor in thj blood," for which they treated tho blood, giving tho mineral, potash. Joy's Vegetabls Barsaparilla follows tho modem ideas of Dr. Fox, and aims with gentle vegetablo altera tives at tho stomach and digestive organs. The reason is apparent why it cures dyspep sia and indigestion, and tho pimple3 and Bkin eruptions which result therefrom and vhy sarsaparlllas that uso minerals fail. -.rTwrT8nri.THTTn You are invited to our Plain, Simple, Or dinary Opening Our stock of Holiday Goods, Toys, Books, etc., will amaze you, our prices will astonish you.
