CzJ te gailtj $tom ASTOKIA. OREGON: THURSDAY... .NOVEMBER 28. 1889. From April 1st, to the 16th inst, there arrived at San .Francisco, from all sources, 792,935 cases salmon. For the corresponding period in 1887-88, there arrived 451,515 cases. Ik some parts of the country cigar ettes are quite commonly referred to as "coffin nails." This is unjust to coffin nails, -which are, in their -way, useful and even necessary articles. Since Brazil fired out its emperor and adopted republican simplicity, the editor and the man with the tape "worm, are the only ones on this con tinent that have a right to say "we." It is stated on good authority that the Rock Island road ha3 made satis factory arrangements for competing with the Northwestern-Union Pacific combination for Pacific coast traffic. The Philadelphia church which recently decided to have thirty can didates preach in succession, and then call the best of the lot, is reported to be having a great deal more fun than the candidates. Br recent acts of congress every male Indian over twenty-one years of age, who accepts an allotment of land in severalty, becomes a voter. There will probably- be more than 20,000 such voters at the next election. The Oregon Transcontinental com pany, under control of Villard, has issued a circular. The resumption of dividends is said to be practicable and the fight with the Union Pacific Manitoba combination aud the prop osition to reorganize the compony are discussed. Ex-president Cleveland laid the cor ner stone of the new Democratic head quarters in Brooklyn on Wednesday, aud governor Hill wrote regretting his "inability" to be present. When governor Hill spoke in the Brooklyn Academy of music the other day ex president Cleveland was unable to at tend. New England parties have recently inaugurated a large land enterprise in East Chattanooga, Tenn. The pay ment of 750,000 for 2,000 acres ad joining the Tennessee city's limits and nearly 2,000 more acres of ore lands in northern Georgia is involved, the plau being to build a manufacturing suburb to Chattanooga. The project is said to include the buildiug of man ufactories, hotels, business-blocks, etc., for which 5,000,000 will be secured. John Foknev aged sixty, starved to death in Cincinnati, and left 60,000 to have a monument erected. Looks sort e'silly: but it is no sillier than what a good many are deing: piling up money and starving the soul and the social instincts. John's monu ment will be symbelical: lie gave his life for cash to build it. It was while riding on the rail, out into the deep blue sea, one pleasant day, at the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia river, on the occasion of his visit here last summer, that the gallant senator Allison, of Iowa, pro posed to aud was accepted by the hand some young lad' that is soon to be his bride. Thkee transcontinental railroads will be in Astoria in 1890. Did you ever think that the eastern termini of those three roads is New York, New Orleans and Chicago? The great east, the great south, and the greater west, all with transcontinental lines with depots overlooking deep water at As toria. This is why Astoria property is such a good buy. PeteoiiEUm V Nasbt did not re ceive a very munificent sum for his letters from the- "Confederate X Roads." The Indianapolis Journal, in which they appeared in 18G, has just confessed that Mr. Locke not only received no pay for them, but that he gave the Journal 2 each for printing them, that being about the cost of composition. The Journal did, however permit Nasby to use the type after the letters had been set up, and from this typo was printed the yellow-colored pamphlets which Nas by sold. It was one of these pam phlets which Abraham Lincoln was reading while sitting in the war department waiting for news of his second election. Several Rills of Local Importance. Among other bills to be introduced by senator John H. Mitchell at the coming session of congress, are bills appropriating $100,000 to begin. the construction of a boat railway at The Dalles, and Celile: also adequate amounts for the continuation of the work at the Cascades and at the mouth of the river: for the improve ment of the Columbia between here and the mouth of the Willamette, and from the mouth of the Willamette to Portland and Oregon City and other river and harbor werk: also bills for five lighthouses to cost 80,000 each, one on McKenzie's head to cost 50, 000: for the establishment of four new life saving stations, and for the aoDro- priation of 85,000 to add a new boat for use in this light house district: a bill for 12o,000, for which he has se cured the recommendation of the treas ury department for the revenue ma rine vessel for duty on this coast, with headquarters at Asteria: a bill which passed the senate last session but failed in the house, appropriating 15, 000 for the construction of a wharf at Astoria for the use of the lighthouse department; and sundry other meas ures of local importance. TEHjapC. Specials to The Astorian. Portbaxd, Nov. 27. Tins morning in the criminal court Dr. W. E. Mo- Tand went to trial on an indictment charging him with manslaughter by performing a criminal operation upon a young married woman named Hat tie Morrison, on the 16th of last March. The line of defense will be an attempt to prove that defendant is a victim of a blackmailing scheme. The prosecution, however, have suf ficient testimony in reserve to thwart such a move. William Jefferson began a libel suit this morning in the United States dis trict court against the British bark (tlemffer to recover the sum of 9, which he alleges to be due him as wages for services as the steward on that vessel. It is claimed that the vessel sailed from London on the 6th of February of this year, at which time Jefferson was engaged at a monthly salary of 20, when the vessel got here Jefferson found his foot to be diseased and engaged the services of a physician, who advised him not to return with the vessel to a. The master then discharged Jefferson from his service, but refnsed to pay the amount due him. A few days since the ship left Portland, and is now at Astoria, getting ready to put to sea. liobert Jf arrm is the master of the Glenifler. THE BURNT CITr. Lynn, Mass., Nov. 27. The city is patrolled by militia, 250 men being on duty, stationed at the entrance of the ruined streets, barring an approach to the burned district. The guards are stationed at stores partially cleaned out to prevent thieves from takiug what is left. No one is permitted to pass the guards without a permit from the city clerks. Through associated chanties many families were furnished lodging last night in rooms hired at lodging and dwelling houses, and portions of hot soup, crackers and bread are being served to all in need of food. As soon as some plan for assistance can lie de vised the work of providing for the destitute families will progress rap idly. TIIE TOTAL LOSS. Boston, Nov. 27. Manufacturers are of the opinion that the total loss al Lynn is nearly 5,000,000. The number of buildings burned is two hundred and ninety-six, of which for ty-six were brick blocks; one hundred and twelve wooden buildings used for business purposes, and one hundred and forty-two dwellings occupied by one hundred and sixty-four families. The number of laboring people thrown out of work is estimated at eight thousand. A COWARDLY MURDER. New York, Nov. 26. James Tier- ney, a crippled old watchman on the Morgan line pier this afternoon dis charged Joseph Kinney longshoreman for neglecting his work. Immediately upon receiving the wages due him Kinney purchased a pistol and return mg lay in wait for his victim. When the watchman returned from dinner Kinney sneaked up behind him and shot him in the back. Tierney started to run Kinney following and firing shot after shot into his back until he had emptied the last barrel. Tierney fell against a bale of cotton, mortally wounded. The murderer was imme diately arrested. A SERIOUS BLUNDER. A Iiady Nearly Prostrated by a Pat ent Medicine.
