f - 1f.f!l -"susses ) &)&mem. ASTORIA. OREGON: FKIDAY.... JfOVEMBER 15. 1889. It begins to look as if the race prob lem might be settled. A new patent cotton picker lias been tested in the south, and it does the work of one hundred field hands. Judge Leeper once owned 160 acres of land near Pierre, the new capital of Dakota. The land would now be worth 250,000, but the judge sold it for 3,000 and is now shoveling coal for a living. The muskrat, the goose bone, and the corn husk have held their annual caucus, and the face of the returns point to a mild winter. Such unani mity on this point cannot help but be assuring to the fuel dealers. Sam Jones delivered a sermon re cently in Virginia in which he said: "John the Baptist was the bravest type of Christian I know of. He jumped on Herod and pawed his feathers out." "Minnie "SYaii:lace"v7aiiKTTp, who was tried at Emporia, Kan., for poisoning her husband, has obtained a pension because of his services in the army. There is something funny about this if you stop to think about it. Gen. Daniel Butterfield, who recently saw in Norway the ship of the vikings that has been excavated and set up, says it is of black oak, about 75 feet ih length, and in lines quite equal to any thing constructed in these days. The one passage of Scripture which the Adventists overlook in predicting the date of the end of the world is that which declares that no one shall know of the coming of the Lord. There is plenty of legitimate specula tion in the weather department for these people if they must predict. The Canadians are charging Am erican and French fishermen with the cause of the destitution on the Lab rador coast They assert that Glou cester vessels swept the shores, using trap nets and other destructive con trivances and getting full cargoes, without paying attention to the 3 mile limit If the American newspapers were as serious and as dignified as Sir Ed win Arnold would have them they might break down under the strain of the "enterprise, vivacity, push and dash" which the poet says they ex hibit We try to 'make the race of life with light hearts here in Am erica. Ovek one million people, and over 375,000 square miles of domain, have been admitted into the Union this month. In no other year of the American Bepublic has so many states, since the original thirteen, come in as have been admitted dur ing the first eleven days of November, 1889. A swiNDiiER sold a Clinton County Michigan farmer a recipe for making his wheat weigh twice as much as it ought to, who signed a contract to divide the money gained by the extra weight with the scientific swindler. The "contract" eventually turned up as a promissory note and the farmer paid 300 for it Ohio has been counting up and finds that she has thirty-one different laws made for the benefit of the pub lic which are practically inoperative. It is the same in all other states, and no city pretends to enforce one-half its ordinances. There are five law breakers to one law-abider, and still the good work goes on and on. A onuRcn congregation at Bed Bank, N. J., paid a big price to get a minister who was a hustler. He hus tled around the first week and got his facts and figures, and on Sunday he told them that there was more meanness in the town to the square foot than any other place in the world. On Monday they paid him a bonus to hnstle away. One reason why France, Germany and Bussia discourage immigration to the United States is because foreign ers who come here soon drop into the English language and discard their own, thus making a loss of numbers to the other language. This feeble check will not delay the inevitable a month. English as she is spoke will be the universal language of the world in time. The laws of most of the states now prohibit persons not accredited by some incorporated medical school from the practice of medioine. This is a safegaurd although not always an effective one against the injurious work of quacks and incompetents. There seems, however, to be no means of preventing the fatal work of the fanatics or charlatans, who under the name of one or another ism, prevent people from receiving proper medical treatment and permit them to die of pure neglect. Thebe will be no difficulty in clas sifying the eight senators from the new states in such a manner as to pre serve the equality of the three classes into which the senate, under the con stitution, must be divided. The term of senators of one class will expire in 1891: that of senators of the second in 1893, and that of senators of rd class in 1895. Twentv-six nt senators go out in 1895 j each of the eight other classes num ber twenty-five. Two of the eight new senators will necessarily be as signed to the class of 1895, three to that of 1893, and three to that of 1891, mak ing twenty-eight in each class. The assignments to the several classes will, according to precedent, be determined by lot. ' Twenty-nine lives saved after an all night battle in a Lake Michigan gale, is the record of the Evanston Uni versity life-saving crew. Three boats were driven aground last Tuesday night at 7 o'clock, and an hour later the life crew of college boys were risk ing their own live3 to save others. This voluntary risk and sacrifice for strangers is the highest type of hero ism, and the past efforts of the college crew sums up in -nine years the splen did total of thirty-eight vessels assist ed, and 202 lives saved. "Boys will be boys, they say, which means that youth must have its folly. But one such act of heroism by a band of "boys" redeems in the eyes of middle aged propriety a very large patch of very wild oats. Cabinet officers under the present administration have a very trying time lately. So have the cabinet la dies. In almost every city in the United States yearly rents expire on or about the 1st of May. Not so in "Washington. Now is the housekeep er's winter of discontent in the Capi tal City. Every man or woman who does not own a house and many that do are now hunting for places to live during the coming season. The fact that this is the first year of the administra tion makes the houses scarcer and the work harder. It is no exaggeration to say that house hunting is harder there than it is anywhere else, except it may be Astoria. The town is not big enough for its population, and it is es sentially a city of lodging houses. It is estimated that six out of ten house renters in Washington, take houses without any reasonable ground for believing that they will be able to pay the rent. They hope to pay it by taking lodg ers during the eeason of congress. This is the reason that house-hunting is more distressing than it is in cities where the native population does not try to rent the town on speculation and thus handicap the would-be resi dent renter. Even the cabinet officials have had an unusually hard time, and although they have nearly all at last succeeded in getting houses, all of them are not settled. While house hunting cabinet officers have a hard time the senators and congressmen have even more obstacles to combat Advertisements like the following crowd the daily papers: Wanted. In a private family, by a senator and wife, three nicely fur nished rooms and bath, with first class board; also room for maid. As a rule the members of congress do not go until jnstbefoTe the session and then there is a grand scramble for rooms and houses. HE TOOK THE WBON'O MEDICINE. Robert Stewart, ot Fetaluma, reoentl y had a queer experience. Ho writes : "Carbuncle and bolls afflicted my face and neck for week. Finally I procured a bottle of one of tho leading sarsap&rlllai. To my rurpriaa it made matters worse. This made me lose faith, in aaraaparlllas, hat seeing a statement that Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparllla dried tip bolls and face eruptions Instead of forcing mora out as the potash Earsaparillai do, I bought a bottle. The effect was aston ishing. Tho carbuncles and bolls began to dry up, and in two weeks my face wa -well and cmooth'asever. My brother also took a bo ttlo 1th tho same benefit. Eodket Stxwxbt, "Petaluraa, CaL" Explanatory Note The mineral iodldo of potash, which Is the basis ot nearly all other sanaparlllas, attacks the blood direct, hence forces impurities through tho skin, creating more bolls and pimple. Joy's Vegetablo Sar saparllla acta oppositely. Its vegetable alter atives stimulate the various secretive organs and thus eliminate all impurities through the natural channel, hence dries un pimples and skin eruptions at once. Tho above testimon ial ia a cm la point. ADVICE TO MOTH K KM. Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup should always be used for children teething. The can didates on the Tammany ticket, for instance, have to stake pretty round sums on canhces of getting elected The hurrah and congratulations from party friends upon nomination are all very pleasant, but the assess ment that is put upon the candidate by Tammany is not so pleasant a thincr for the officer-seeker to contem plate. Tammany puts up pretty stiff figures this year m the way ot assess ments. Frank T. Fitzerald, nominee for Begister, an office that pays $12,000 a year for three years and certain fees. i3 assessed $15,000 Henry Bischoff jr., nominee tor juage oi Tneuourt oi of Common Pleas, an office that pays 15,000 per year for fourteen years, is assessed 15.000. Henry A. Gilder- sleeve, nominee for Judge of the Court of General Sessions, an office mat pays 12,000 a year for fourteen years, is assessed 15,000. He is kicking at this figure. He expected the Repub lican indorsement as well as the Tam many nomination, and he don't seem to think that Tammany alone is worth an investment of 15,000. Judge Nehrbas and Robert A. Van Wyck, nominees for the city court judgeships that pay 10,000 a year for six years, are assessed 8,000 each. John H. V. Arnold, nominee for the office of presi dent of the board of alderman, an of fice that pays 3000 a year, has to pay a small assessment, out tue piace costa him nearly if not quite as much as it pays him. These figures only take into account the money that the candidates must pay to the organization. It is their investment in the political market. They put up that margin to win office and the power and salary that the of fice gives. Besides these fixed charges there are other expenses that are mci dental, but when footed up they reach large figures. Bischon ana ttuuer sleeve, for instance, each have head quarters to maintain, which is expen sive. iV. Y. Times, Oct. 30th. A Sound Legal Opinion. E.iJalnbridi'e Munday Esq., County Attv-Clav Co.. Texas says: 'Have used EFectric Bitters with . most happy re sults. My brother also was very low with Malarial Fever and Jaundice, but was cured by timely use of. this medi cine." Am satisfied Electric Bitters saved his life." Mr.D. I. Wilcoxson, of Horse Cave, Ky., adds a like testimony, saying: He postively believes he would have died had it not been for Electric Bitters.
