COULD HAVE BEEN EI0H, But Didn't Embrace His Opportunities. Harvey Brace resides in Lincoln county, and is interested with his brother ni a sawmill in Idaho." He went to Spokane Falls in 1879, and worked for A. M. Cannon, at the saw mill in that city. Mr. Cannon was at that time also running a small store and times were hard and money scarce. Hon. James N. Glover, who had come in advance of all the others, and who had stood his ground through many a dark hour prior to the arrival of many of the present residents, was making a manly struggle to build up and maintain the little town by the falls, but all were poor, for monejr was scarce and the prospect not as bright and certain as it is to-day by any means. After Harvey Brace had worked for Mr. Cannon for some time he drew his pay one day and was told by Mr. Can non that although his services were valuable he guessed he would have to let him go unless he- would take half lus future compensation in town lots. As the sale for lumber at the mill was limited Mr. Cannon explained that he could not see his way clear to pay him 85 a day in cash, and that was the pay he was getting. The town lots Mr. Cannon desired, to let him have were along 'Riverside avenue, where the principal business is now trans acted upon that street. Corner lots were 50 and inside lots were placed at 25. Mr. Brace thought this was pretty high for these lots, and did not feel that he could afford to work ;on such terms. He thought it would pay him better to go out into the fanning country and get him a piece of land, and this is; perhaps, what most men would have thought at that time. Tho lots which Mr. Brace could have bought at 25 each in 1879, and which he refused at that price, are now worth about 850,000 each. If he had concluded to "blow in" half his salary on these lots, 'he would have earned at least three or four of them each month. And if he had held onto them until now, this would have made his half salary realize him about 8150, 000 each month. A CHILD KILLED. To Theater Otvnors. Managers and hom it May Concern : This is tncortifyth.it I havo oouippod tjio Windsor thenter in this city with tho Lind gren st.itionnry chomical firo enginos. After oxnniining nil other systoms of firo protection, and after repeated tests of the Lindsren sta tionary chemical firo ongino, andupontho re commondation of tho insurance under-writ-ers, I have no hositntion in i)ronouncins it tho cheapest and most powerful, as well as perfect, lire protection for theaters over in vented. In my opinion every theater ar.d opera houso in tho United States, as well as Europe, should bo oquipped with those chem ical tiro engines, and thus savo the loss of life and thousands ot dollars in property, ltespectfully. (Signed) II. I. GOLD V. Owner Windsor Theater, Chicago, Ills. Sco What a Practical Fireman Says. Tacomn, Wash.. Sept. 19, 1889, To Whom it May Concorn : This is to certify thatl. George A.Eurbank, witnessed tho exhibition of tho Lindgren chemical engino test to-day, and as I have witnessed a groat many such chomical tests in Now York City, Boston, Mass., and other largo cities in tho East, I hereby state that it was tho quickest and most satisfactory tost, and was also pronounced so by two of our councilmcn and all tho citizens present, and I will also state that tho tinio of applying the chemical was left entirely to mo and I didnot give tho word until tho firo was well started, for in other tests I havo witnessed they havo always put tho chemical on tho minute the firo was started and wator would answer just as well, as thcro was nothing but tho flame started antl tho wood not charred, and I take great pleasuro in recommending tho "Lind gren" as far superior to any other "Chomical" engine on tho market. (Signed) GEORGE A. BURBANK. Secretary Paid Firo Department. Director of tho Northwestern Eire Associa tion. Was last year Secretary of tho Northwest ern l' lromairs Association.
