CO - VOL. XXXI1T, NO. !). ASTOTITA, OREGON, SUNDAY, OCTOBER k2(). 1889. PRHE MVE CENTS es Cough medicines, Ayer's Cherry Pec toral is in greater demand than ever No preparation for Throat and Lung Troubles is so piompt in its effects, sc agreeable to the taste, and so widelj known, as this. It is the family medi cine in thousands of households. "I have suffered for years from a bronchial trouble that, whenever I take cold or am exposed to inclement weath, er, shows itself by a very annoying ticklinc'sensation in the throat and by difficulty in breathing. I have tried a great many remedies, but none does so well as Ayer's Cherry Pectoral which always gives prompt relief in returns ol my old complaint." Ernest A. Hepler, Inspector of Public Roads. Parish Ter re Bonne, La. "I consider Ayer's Cherry Pectoral a most important remedy For Home Use- I have tested itn curative power, in my family, many times during the past thirty years, aud have never known it to fail. It will relieve the most serious affections of the throat and lungs, whether in children or adults." Sirs. E. G. Edgerly, Council Bluffs, Iowa. "Twenty years ago I was troubled with a disease of the lungs. Doctors afforded me no relief and considered my case hopeless. I then began to use Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, and, before I had finished one bottle, found relief. I continded to take this medicine until a cure was effected. I believe that Ayer's Cherry Pectoral saved my life." Samuel Griggs, "Waukegan, 111. "Six years ago I contracted a severe cold, which settled on my lungs and soon developed all the alarming symp toms of Consumption. I had a cough, night sweats, bleeding of the lungs, pains in chest and sides, and was so E rostrated as to be confined -to my ed most of the time. After trying rarious prescriptions, without benefit, my physician finally determined to give me Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. I took it, and the effect was magical. I seemed to rally from the first dose of this medicine, and, after using only three bottles, am as well and sound as ever." Rodney Johnson, Springfield, 111. A CELEBRATED OASE. How a" Jockey Won $4,000 on "Ju bilee" at the Late State fair Meeting. Concerning a case which is now on trial in the Marion county circuit court, the Portland Telegram relates this stery: Chris. Peterson, the owner of the running horse "Jubilee," has gone up to Salem to stand trial for an alleged piece of race horse jobbery. Peter son lives at Sacramento, California, and was formerly trainer for J. B. Haggin. A gentleman who has been around the circuit aud knows all about jthe ins and outs of rnco bus iness, said. "The trouble came about as fol fel fol eows: Peterson had "Jubilee" en tered for the mile and a quarter dash at the state fair meeting. Up to the day of the race he had failed to pay his entrance fee and had about de cided to withdraw his horse, a3 he had joined a pool made up of Babb, himself and two otheis, who were each to put up $500 to back "Coloma" to win." "Hazlitt was to ride "Coloma" but when he found out "Coloma" was out to win and "Jubilee1 was not in the race, he thought he saw a chance for a 'hog killing.'" "He prevailed on Peterson. to enter "Jubilee," saying that he would ride him and protect "Coloma." That is he would ride "Jubilee" aud crowd out anyiiorse likely io beat ''Coloma," at the same time holding back "Ju bilee" so as to let "Coloma" win." "Peterson and his pool agreed to the arrangement, and "Jubilee" was entered at the last moment. Then Hazlitt goes to work and buys the field, with "Jubilee" iu it, for all the money ho had, aud stood to win $!, COO on him. The race was ran and "Jubilee" came in au easy winner. Of course, there was a big kick raised, aud all the iuside men, Wool man, Babb aud all of them, dropped a lot of money." "When "Jubilee" came in first Peterson thought that he had beeu jobbed by the pool, and refused to pay his S500 sliare of it. Babb and the others then attached "Jubilee," for tho amount. Peterson gave bonds and sent the horse to Sacramento, and to-day stands his trial at Salem." "Hazlitt skipped to California with a pocketful after throwing down all his friends." "Tho above story shows how little chance tho 'rank outsider' has when he bets on a horse race, for it is fair to presume that some such arrange ment as tho above is mnde on every race, end unless a man is on tho 'in side' his winnings are liko angel's visits." Exactly What Is Sought After. A safe, reliable, harmless, not lepul sive remedy that can he taken without changing tne regular diet or disorganiz ing the system; a vegetable compound assisting nature to get rid of impurities in a gradual manner as nature intended. WW OPIE T. BEAD. How He Obtained an Advertisement for His Paper. Opie T. Bead, the editor ol the Ar Jiansaw Traveler, is a very big man, with a tremendously heavy head of long, black, unkempt hair. One day he was passing the office of a well- known hair-restorative establishment on State street, Chicago. His part ner, Mr. Benham, way with him, and said: "We ought to get an advertisement out of this establishment." Opie looked in aqd saw a family of country people irffiide. "I'll get it for you right now,'' said he, and in ho walked. Tho countryman had just taken off his hat, and was showing the manag er how bald he was, and asking if he thought tho hair would ever grow again on hi3 head. Opie walked up to the manager, and, putting out.his hand, warmly said: "My dear sir, I have come a long way to thank yon in person and to show yon what your restorative has done for me." He took off his old, black slouch hat, and shook out his long and won derfully thick, fine hair. "There, sir," said he gratefully, "look at that. Four months ago, you remember, I was as bald as that elec tric lamp there." The manager was a little dazed. This was rather more than he could swallow. "What did you do for. it?" put in the interested countryman. "Used this restorer four dozen bottles of it according to directions." The upshot of it was the country man took two dozen bottles and went his way. "There," said Opie to his partner, "now you talk business with this man, aud I guess you'll get a pretty good advertisement out of him." When the manager learned who Opie was ho said: "You can put me down for tho big gest ad. in your paper, and send in your bill when you please." A DUTY 1 O YOUKSEIiF.
