Bnt the farmers feel that this great advance has been made by other classes than themselves. It i3 conceded that the lands of Illinois have declined in aggregate value dur ing the last ten years several hun dred million dollars. The result of this decline is effecting an important change in the rural population. The ambitious boys and girls are leaving the farm, and the farms themselves are passing into new ownerships, rep resenting less intelligence and lesa aspiration toward higher conditions of life. The moro thoughtful farmers are very much absorbed just now iu studying the causes of this decline of prosperity, and the apparent decline of those-conditions' which alone contrib ute to prosperity. There iB an argu ment of the politicians and middle men that confuses the farmer. It is to the effeot that farm products are sold at as high a price, and that marketing, clothing and machinery are bought at lower prices than formerly. But the farmer claims, and with justice, that wo-are living in a new civiliza tion, and that he. like nil other pro ducers, has a right to the best that it affords. Illinois Coir. Boston Trav eller Jay Gould Never Alone. Jay Gould, who has been here with his family for two weeks, also left to daj The peculiarity has been noticed that Mr. Gould is never alone. He never left his room, or appeared anywhere, without several persons with him. Hisaughter, Miss Nellie Gould, almost always has hold of his arm, and his son, George Gould, walks behind or at his side. Gen erally there have been four persons with 'him, but seldom leas than three, and there was, also, at the United States hotel, during his stay here, a man who managed to keep near him, or followed closely in his wake wher ever he went. This man is snpposed to be a private detective. With all his millions, Mr. Gould looks like a careworn, harassed and unhappy man. Saratoga Letter to Phila delphia Times. A DUTY TO XOUKBEIiF.
