Seeing a -story about old Stephen Girard the other day reminded me of an incident that shows one of his peculiarities. Girard "had a drayman who waa a decidedly poor man. One day the drayman, who waa an indus trious, bright fellow, with a good many months to fill at borne, was beard to remark that he wished be was rich. "What is that?" sharply said Girard, who heard the grumble. "O," said the man, "I was only wish ing I was rich." "Well, why don't yop get rich?" said the millionaire, harshly. "I don't know how without money," returned the drayman. "You don't need money," said Girard "Well, if you will tell me how to get rioh without money, I won't let the grass grow before trying it," replied the other. '-There is going to be a Bhip load of confiscated tea sold at auction to-morrow at the wharf; go down there and bny it, and then come to me." The man laughed. "I hove no money to bny a ship load of tea with," he said. "You don't need any money, I tell you," snapped the old man. "Go down and bid on the whole cargo, and then come to me." The next day 'the drayman went down to the sale. A large crowd of retailers were present, and the auctioneer said that those bid ding would have the privilege of taking one case or the whole ship load, and that the bidding would be on the pound. He then be gan the Bale. A retail grocer started the bidding and the drayman raised him. On seeing this the crowd gazed with no small amount of sur prise. When the .case waa knocked down to the drayman the auctioneer said he supposed fte buyer only de Bired the one case. (I take the whole ship load' cooly returned the successful bidder. The auctioneer was astonished, but, on some one speaking to him that it was Girard's man who was the speaker, his man ner changed, and he said he supposed it was all right. The news soon spread that Girard was buying tea in large quantities, and the next day the price rose several cents. ,Go and sell your tea," said Girard to the drayman the next day. The dray man was shrewd, and he went and made contracts with several brokers to take the stock at a shade below the market price, thereby making a quick sale. In a few hours he was Ayer's Hair Vigor keeps the hair fresh and bright. It restores n natu ral color to faded and gray hair, and renders it pliant and glossy. Population Of Washington. The following is from a Green ville, Washington county letter to the Hillsboro Demecrat: An" accident occurred last Saturday in the hills near Manning's millwhich resulted in the death of a little girl aged three years, daughter of a man whose name we have been unable to learn. It seema that the mother of the child was sick at the time of the accident and had told her little boy to make some brine to put over a lot of meat. After boiling the- brine the boy ponred it into a tnb and left it stand ing for a few minutes, when the child, by a mis-step, fell backwards into the soalding brine. The child lived until Sunday night, when death ended her suffering. The father of the child is at present engaged in building a house for John Bellinger, where the news of the aooident reached him about noon on Sunday. He coolly said "by they must look out for things at home, I can't leave my job and climb up them mountains.." And although informed that the child was thought to be dying, he did not go until the next day, when a neighbor brought Jbim word that the child was dead.
