J. AV. CONN. ' President. C. R. THOMSON, Secretary, What, the Land Officials Say. 'Tho officials in tho general land office say that thoy are not aware that the rovj ernment is withholding from settlers in Oregon patents for timber lands to any great extent, on tho ground that the land3 are agrionlturaL There are. some, cases held up, pending investigation by the special agents, to determine the char acter of the land. The great trouble tha.t the land offi cials have to deal with, they sayj is to prevent. the violation of. the law in re gard, to the entry of timber land, not only in Oregon, but in the northwest generally. By the law one person can make only one entry of 160 acres of tim ber land. Syndicates have been formed, and great bodies of timber land, some times as mnch as 50,000 -or 100,000 acres have been purchased by individuals with the understanding that when they re ceived the patents they would be turned over to the syndicate, which not only furnished the money to the individual to purchase theJand, but paid him also for the nse of his name. In many cases these men are brought from -the eastern cities, as the menjiving in this country have, as a general thing, exhausted their .right to either purchase or enter, on gov ernment land. The law confines a man's right to a timber entry, one homestead, one pre emption,. one desert-land entry, and one timber culture entry. In some cases where a party holds a homestead or other entry, and desires to acquire more land, he purchases a timber entry. 'To do this, he has to prove that the land is j-timber land, but in a number of cases the land which is thus declared -to pe timber land is agricultural land, and in these cases cases, according tojaw, he entryman loses his purchase nftney of 2.50 per acre, which, he gave to the local register and receiver at the time4 he made his finnl proof. be law -pro vides for forfeiture and tho punishment of his attempted fraud. At the general land office here it is thought that these two olasses of oases are causing trouble 'in Oregon, if any ser ious trouble exists. The foreign markets cer tainly justify this assertion.. England will need to import 144,000,000 bushels during the next twelve months, and the Russian -grain- crops are disappointing Russia last year sent most of her grain to the European market. This. year she will have to buy back her own grain at an increased price. The price of oats' in Albany is 25 to 30 cents. -46any Her ald.
