Dated this 5th day of September, 1889. EEOOMOrrEEING UNDER D1TH-OULTLES. The fiecent Experience of a Survey Party in the Hehalem Country They "Were "Weary and Hungry. On Sunday morning at 5 o'clock a sur veying party, consisting of "William Reid, president, F. E. Habersham, chief en gineer and assistant engineer Cooper, of the Astoria and South Coast railway, with another Portland gentleman and guide, left Vernonia, Columbia county, Or., in search of a new railroad pass through tha headwaters of Bock creek and Deep creek to Jewell over govern ment unsnrved lands. Being assured by their guide they would cross the divide to the settlements before 7 o'clock that evening no provisions were taken. At 3:30 r. m. they had not only lost their dinner but also their way home, and rain and mists coming on, the guide could not tell where they we're and no trail could be found anywhere. They accordingly resolved to walk down Deep "creek and wade through the Waters of that river to the Nehalem, a distance of twenty mile3. After plod ding five miles through the woter and falling repeatedly over head in the stream, night overtook them, and weary, wet and hungry, without provisions, they kindled a huge fire and slept the sleep of the just in the open air. Bain 1 came on during the night, and in the morning, wot and disconraged, the party i determined to seek their breakfast, hav ing tasted no food from thft, previous morning at S.o'clock. So they Wandered on over timber, fallen logs, trees and thick brush and ravines without a trail till G o'clock on Monday morning, Mr. Beid going first. At last they came aorqss a tree on which was carved these words. "Cougar ridge, 4th of Septem ber, 1884, B. W. C." They were very hungry and looking for breakfast, and tho first thing Mr. Beid, who was walking a head, saw which looked like eating, was a huge cougar standing on a fallen tree. The cougar was hungry ami' Was looking for his breakfast, and the question arose whether he should eat Mr. Beid or allow Mr. Bied to eat him. Knowing nothing of the doctrine of the survival of tho fit test, the fiorce brute prepared to spring on Mr. Beid, when as quick as lightning the gnide, James Adams, of Vernonia, raised his Winchester and shot the cou gar dead on tho spot. It measured twelve feet from tip to tip. Not feeling inclined to wait nntil the cougar could bo cooked, the party pushed on through the forest, and at length ueard the wel come sound of a cow bell, and at 10 o'clock sat down to the long sought breakfast at the ranch pf Ben Birken field, five miles from the Nehalem river, swearing that they would never under-, take to cross these mountains again without provisions. One of the party sent Mr. Birkenfield with two hounds, back to bring in the skin of the cougar, and send it to Portland as a memento of his experiences in search of a new route for the Astoria and South Coast railroad to Portland.
