Richard Gil pin had his landlord, "William Crothers, a street car driver, arrested this morning for assault with a dangerous weapon. The reverend gentleman failed to pay his rent or vacate the premises, hence the trouble. THE "FIEBY CEOSS" 'WON. News has just been received here of the arrival at Queenstown of the British ship Fiery Cross. There would be noth ing remarkable in that fact were it not that her captain had made a bet of $500 with the master of the British ship Hornby Castle which sailed from Astoria the same day with the Fiery Cross, that he would beat him to their home port. The latter vessel reached there August 15th, being out 121 days. At last reports the losing ship had not reached Queens town. The Fiery Cross was laden with 1,399 tons of Hour and wheat, end the Hornby Castle carried 1,43G tons of tho same material. OVERWORKED CLKBKS STRIKE. Chief clerk "W. T. Henri of the railway postal service left this morning on in structions received from Washington for Spokake Falls. His trip was occasioned by the fact that a strike has been insti gated at the postoffice there by the clerks, who declme to work more! than a few days longer on ac count of short pay, long hours and overwork. Mr. Henry will stay at Spo kane till the difficulty is settled, and in case the clerks should quit work he will make up the mail himself with the aid of special assistants. Inspector Truetlin has left San Fran cisco for Spokane where ho will remain until the danger of a strike is past. The clerk's report to-day says, are not inclined to quit so quickly as to cause the mails to be blocked but will stay until their successors are appointed or additional help and increase of salary have been provided. STEAMBOAT HAND INJURED. Nels Peterson, a deck hand on the steamer Thompson was caught under a gang plank while making a landing at thisoity. His leg was broken, and he was sent to St. Vincent hospital where his injuries W6re attended to. GONE BACK EAST. Sidney Dillon, tho U. P. railway mag nate, left for' tho oast this morning, on the O. A circular issued by the Oregon and Transcontinental railroad iixes November 5th as the date for the special meeting of stockholders I at Portland. Orecron. to consider and act I upon the question to bo submitted to the directors, whether the capital of the company shall be reduced, or whether the company shall be liquidated and go out of existance. Tho statement is set forth that notwithstanding the resolu tions adopted by tho directors tho man agement hesitates to act finally. If the management should conclude to aaviso a vote for liquidation, the stockholders will be given tho choice between taking their full share.of the company's assets in kind, or cash and coming into the new corporation, tho formation of which is under consideration, on precisely equal terms. If tho contemplated transform ation of tho company into a new one is carried out, it is intended to make tho latter a strictly financiering institution. A special field of operations promising very lucrative business is open, and it is already assured valuable connections in this country and Europe. A TRABIE BLAZE. JQao Qui Parle, Minn., Sept. San Fratmscb Ezam;ncr, Crawling Over the Rocks and Sand. The steamer Modoc came up from Portland, Tuesday evening carrying something over 18 tons of general freight for Salem. This was a remarkable trip and great credit is due the O. R. & Co., for the efforts they are making to carry on their river traffic The river is so low that it is said in crossing some of the bars the boat can bo felt to actually crawl over the rocks and sand.
