Last even ing at dusk Frank Alpaugh, a farmer, living ten miles east of here cashed a draft at the town of Silverton for 1,100 and started on horseback for home. When he reached a creek two miles from Silverton he was met by two men who presented pistols and demanded the cash; which he turned over. One robber said he had a no tion to shoot him, when Alpaugh grasped the revolver, and in a tussle received a shot through his groin, which struck and damaged a watch in his pocket, but did no other harm. The other robber then struck him from behind, knocking him senseless. Alpaugh lay on the ground for a long time and this morning reported the affair. The importance of the hop industry in the vicinity of this town is manifested in the fact that enough hop pickers could not be had here, so hands were secured from Portland, and the result is that there is a scaroity of laboring men here now. This year's .crop will not bo quite up to the yield of last year, bnt the quality is better. There are nearly fifty hop yards in Polk county, ami in two of these 225 pick ers will find wcrk. Sorno yards are yielding 3,000 pounds to the acre, though the average is 1,000 ponnup. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castoria PThen Baby was sick, vro gave her Castorta.
