Of a Somewhat Snperflclal Examination. The last congress neglected to or der the printing at once of the report of the operations of the fish commis sion's steamer, Albatross, ou tbe Pa cific coast for 1888, and it has to await its turn in the long line of of ficial documents now in the hands of the public printer, but it is expected that it will be published before fall, and it will be given a wide circula tion on the Pacific coast. It is to be accompanied by several large maps, showing in detail the courses of the explorations and the positions and outlines of all the fish ing grounds so far discovered. The following is a synopsis of that part of the report covering the ex ploration on the coast of Oregon atid Washington territery: Returning south from her explora tions of the Alaskan fishing grounds in September, 1888, the Albatross be gan at once an examination of the outer coasts of Oregon and "Washing ton territory, which was continued until October 20, when stormy weather interfered with further oper ations so far north. While undergo ing repairs at Seattle, and again while calling at Astoria, studies were made of the salmon and other in shore fisheries in these two important localities. The general instructions issued to the Albatross called for a continuous and comprehensive exploratiou of the entire coast from the straits of Fuca southward; but as the season was somewhat limited and would not per mit of tbe entire coast being covered before winter, in ac cordance with this plan, it was deter mined in part to take the advice of persons acquainted with the region and visit special localities, which were supposed to offer good advan tages for fishing. Among those con sulted in this matter were James G. Swan, of Port Townseud; F. C. Reed, state fish commissioner of Oregen: Hon. J. H. D. Gray, and other promi nent citizens of Astoria. Unfor tunately the season proved unfavor able for fishing trawls, as sharks and dogfish had taken possession of most of the grounds, and had driven away the edible specias of fish; bnt the banks were located along nearly the entire const, and their outlines and depths were determined. The halibut banks off Capo Flat tery, and between'that cape and Flat tery rock, were first examined. Both of these banks .have been known to the Indians for a long time. The former extends northwesterly from Cape Flattery about fifteen miles, and is very rich in halibut dur ing the spring and early sum mer. It is capable of supporting a large vessel fishery, as was proved by the experience of the Gloucester smacks during 1888. During the visit of Albatross in September, al though the shark and dogfish were prevalent, several species of halibut could have been obtained in a com paratively short time. The bank be tween the cape and Flattery rock is smaller in size and does not appear to have as many halibut on it. It is doubtful if it would be valuable ground for large vessels to resort to, but an actual trial might prove it otherwise. A reported bank, sixty to seventy fivemiles south of Cape Flattery, was searched for, but could not be found. Following thence down the coast a nearly uniform bottom of gray sand was found to extend as far south aB Gray's harbor, without any indica tions of special fishery resources. To the southwest of Gray's harbor, however, a small bank reported by the Indians was located and sur veyed. The inner edge is about fif teen miles southwest from Point Che halis, and it extends about twenty miles southwest and northeast, with an extreme width of twelve miles, and depths of forty to fifty fathoms. The bottom consists of rocks, mud and sand, and was found to be rich in fish food, but only red rock fish, a few black cod and sharks could be taken on hooks. South of this locality the only favorable fashing grounds that could be found were in the neighborhood of Tillamook rock, and on Hecate bank. A thorough examination was made of the region off the mouth of the Columbia river, without discover ing any banks, but it is interesting to note that a submarine trough ex tends seaward from this river's mouth probably the intersecting extension of the bed of the river at some lime when the continent border stood at a higher level than it does to-day. The eection of coast between Tilla mook rock and Hecate bank has not yet been thoroughly examined, and it is possible that some banks may be discovered there, but no indications of such elevations were discovered in the hasty surveys made. Only a few fish were captured on the trawls about Tillamook rock. It has been claimed that the Indians take large .numbers of halibut in this .region, but inquiry at Astoria developed the fact that the ilat nan actually caught there in such abundance is the so called turbot altJiereates stoniiasf not the halibut, although the latter species may occur sparingly. It is customary with Pacific coast fisher men to speak of all large flounders as halibut, which has led to many errors with regard to the distribution of that species. The Hecate bank is animportant fishing ground, lying in the latitude of 4A degrees north and about thirty five miles off shore. It is about twenty miles long and ten miles wide, the bottom consisting of rocks, with alternating patches of clay and peb bles. It is very rich in the lower form3 of life, but, although several long trawl lines were set for some time, only four fish were captured, namelv, a halibut, weighing ten and one-half peunds: one black cod, one shark and one dog fish. The fact that genuine halibut was taken on the grouud led to the expectation that the Hecate bank would prove the most important fishing ground on the coast of Washington territory and Oregon south of Flattery rocks, but the bank is not now resorted to by fishing vessels. During the month of June of the present year the Albatross again passed through this regiou; but, as the complete report of her operations has not yet beeu completed, it is im possible to give a full account of her discoveries. Only one specimen of halibut was captured en the Oregon coast, and that was taken oil lillamook rock, where red rock cod and flouuders were found to be very abundant. Hal ibut are found off Gape Flattery, but the explorations of the Albatross thus far lend no enconragment to those who look for an extensive hali but fishery south of Hint region. There is no reason, however, why the important fisheries nt the north should not be made partly tributary to Oregon ports, which are only a few hours' further sailing from the grounds than those of Paget sound. The halibut fisheries of the straits of Fnca aud the halibut and cod fish eries of British Columbia and Alaska all hold ont inducements to capital ists aud sailing masters along the entire coast, but both fresh and fletched halibut can be lauded as cheaply at Astoria as at Seattle or Tacoma.
