m Site attg tftoriatt. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATUU1yL..ZI.Z JULY IS. 189 WHAT WILL THE END BE. J. E. Thickston, a scientist and astron omer, living at Hetuchen, N. J., while alluding to the Johnstown horror, said to a Herald correspondent that the dreadful catastrophe was as nothing compared to -what might have occurred. "The news from central Pennsylvania is awful," he said, "but this may be a very little thing compared with what may yet occur. Near and west of the Alleghanies a great opening within the earth's crust must be made somewhere by the escape of natural gas. "Will "the earth settle and fill the empty places, or will air pass' in' and thereby make it possible for-the jmmense reservoirs of gas, stored away, no one knows how far, io explode and make an upheaval? Many people believe there is gas enough un der western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio to blow the country from Lake Erie to the Monongahela into promis cuous fragments. "When oil was struck at Oil Creek in 1859, timid folks feared a collapse and a sinking of the oil field, but that danger was obviated by water rnrmina into the WellS as tU6 oil ran out. The dreaded vacuum never came,.as water took the place of the re moved oil. It is not so in this case. Water is not filling up the gas wells, ex cept to a limited extent. What the out come may be is not really a very enjoy able thing to revolve in our minds these pleasant Julv mornings. A submerged valley, lined with the bones of fifteen thousand men, women and children is a fearful thing in the history of the human race, but what of that compared with a wrecked continent.'' What or mat com pared with a world blown open or blown to fragments? I am not an alarmist or a sensational Wiggins. I do not believe that old Mother Earth is about to be shot into smithereens, but there may be danger ahead in this direction, and al though we grieve over the Conemaugh catastrophe, let us be thankful that there has not been a natural gas explosion out west, and that there are not two rings instead of one sot of asteorids in the material heavens." It is estimated by a mint official that there are still in existence somewhere in the country tied up in old stockings or in the hands of curiosity collectors, over one hundred million of the old-fashioned copper cents, about one hundred and twenty million of copper-nickel cents, five million of the present issue of brown pennies, and twenty-five million of nickel 3-cerit pieces and about Iwo hundred million of the nickel 5-cent pieces. The total value of these outstanding various coins 13 put in round numbers at $C2, 930,000. It has been calculated that the rail roads of the world are worth nearly JCCO, ' 000,000,000 ' ($300,000,000,000), or about one-tenth of the wealth of civililized nations, or more than a quarter of their invested capital. At this rate all the ready money in the world would buy only about one-third of them. "The police," says Joe Howard in the New York Press, "estimate that 50,000 people walk the streets of New York, not knowing where they shall sleep at night, and 50,000 other pooplo sleep as best they can, not knowing how or where they shall break their fast after tho coming dawn.' Thb corner's jury charges the members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting club with responsibility for tho breaking of tho Conemaugh dam which resulted in the great Johnstown disaster. Theee are over 3,000,000 women in this country who are engaged in work which is not domestic. Whatever aro her "rights," a woman's right to work is evidently unlimited. The Woman's Exchange, of Kansas City is to build a homo for working wo men. The house is to cost $30,000, and a $14,000 lot has already been bought to put it up on. Statistics show a growth of $38,000, 000 in the value of tho country's exports in a twelve month, and a growth also in the value of imports to the amount of $18,000,000. In 18G4-5 we had more than six nun dred war vesseles. Among them were the best in the world for the time, and we had more good ones than any other na tion. . Estimating tho population of Philadel phia at 1,1)00,000, a hundred gallons of water a day is supplied to every man, woman and child in the city. Tee. St. Andre coal-pit in Belgium is 3,084 feet deep. This would be a good hiding place for a man while his love- letters are being-read in court. '"PjijLADELpniA has upward of 60,000 comfortable homes, constructed by the aid and through tho operation of loan and' building associations. - .. TlielVow Discovery. Joy a prosperous druggist on the corner of Stockton and Market streets, in San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medi cine kings of the country. But various rumors having been floating around te the effect that he has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an . English physician, a great student of Bot any, located in this city. His practice was not extensive, and yet the few cases that came to him attracted no little ntten tionJ His great success seemed to be iu the treatment of liver and kidney disorders" and vitiated blood. He seemed almost infallible, and bis well-kept secret was as much amystery as himself, j After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all the prescriptions he had filled for the erratic doctor, ho began a systematic analysis. He discov ered running all through the prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetable extracts indigenous to California so simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the active principles involved So certain, however, was Mr. Joy tbat lie had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements In a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise, the taste, and put it before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im mediately the same stories came back of its astonishingcfleets, and the mystery was solved, rand the talk it has created "has nlready caused it to step Into prominence, and orders pour in daily from all over the coast. And thus another California Indus try leaps into existence. S. r Examiner ADVICE TO 3IOT1IKKN. Mns. Win'ST.ow's SooTiiixa Syrup should always be used lor children teething.
