The Democratic majorities in tho national election of 1888 are proof that the solid south is beginning to crnmble at the edges. The New York Herald, a Democratic paper prints these statements, viz: Maryland, in 1880, gave 15,191 Dem ocratic majority; in 1881, 11,233, and in 1888, after four years of a Demo cratic federal administration, only 6,182. Virginia cast, in 1880, 44,55b Demo cratic majority; in 1884, 6,141, and in 1888 this dwindled down to 1,541. West Virginia gave the Democrats a majority of 11,148 in 18S0, which fell to 4,222 in 1884 and to 839 in 1888. Kentucky, in 1880. cast a Demo cratic majority of 42,752; in 1884 this fell to 34,779 and in 1888 to 28,666. Delaware waa Democratic in 1884 by 4,003, and in 1888 by 3,564. The chances are that Virginia and West Virginia will be counted in the Republican column in 1892, and a change of a little over 3,000 votes would separate Maryland from the solid south." Grady, of the Atlanta (Ga.) Constitution, saw "the hand writing on the wall" afterjhe Novem ber election, and truthfully inter preted it when he said: "A Bolid south invites a solid north, and for the south to remain solid is there fore to incur the chanoes of being. placed in perpetual minority and practically shut out from participa tion in the government. ' Cleveland carried four northern states in 1884 and but two in 1888. The house of representatives elected in 1882 had Beventy-one Democratic majority; that chosen in 1884 had only forty-one: in that of 1886 the Democratic majority dwindled down to eleven, and in tho coming congress the Democrats are in the minority.
