a) ' ATOUlA. UiCfcljuiS FRIDAY. -JULY 12, 1889. Africa lias become so popular a sporting ground that the large game is becoming scarce. The Russian government proposes to raise a new loan, to be used in the building of strategic railways. Ox the same Sunday recently one missionary and 50,000 cases of liquor were landed at an African port In April over three hundred and ten million cigars were made, five for each inhabitant of the United States A new oil company has been organ lzedat umcmnati, wnicn it is ex- pscted will be a rival to the Standard monopoly. Active opposition is developing against the proposition to include a prohibitory clause in the south Dako ta constitution. Many of the friends of Henry George are urging him to become a British subject and enter parliament for a Scotch district Johnstown folks are not going to live in the Chicago portable houses. They only cost 100 apiece and are little more than coal-sheds. It is now thought that the loss of life at Johnstown will not exceed 4,- 000; up to Jnly 1st the property losses reported amount to 6,000,000. Louisiana is becoming a sort of limbo " to which Americans consign what they will not have anywhere else lotteries and prize fights, for in stance. Montana has added to her good fortune of the present year by the dis covery within her borders of two veins of gold and silver-bearing quartz one at Granite, the other at Cham pion. The Indiana law to prevent the sale of Chicago dressed beef in Indiana has been declared unconstitutional. Free trade between the several states is a principle firmly imbedded in the constitution. The steamships that leave the At lantic ports in these times are carry ing an unusuallv large number of steerage passengers to Europe. Most or them are foreigners who have been disappointed in America. A baking-powder man started in with a cash capital of $12.50 twenty years ago, cleared up 8,000,000 in the business; and recently sold out his interest for 2,500,000. The baking powder man is boundto rise. It is said that the preliminary as sessment of Philadelphia electors, just completed, indicates a population of n million and a quarter. This would bring Philadelphia pretty close to New York on the score of population. Governor Buckker recently de clined to furnisli a copy of the consti tution of Kentucky to be filed with an exhibit at the Paris exposition, be cause, according to that constitution, slavery appears to be still existing in the commonwealth. The next census will contain the amount of mortgaged indebtedness of the country, when the public will be able to understand to what extent the west is indebted to the east for cap ital to carry on its business, and who holds the mortgages. Tiie German anarchists in New York city are of the opinion that their number will be increased within a short time. Bismarck is pressing Switzerland to expel those of them who have taken refuge on her soil, and the pressure is of a kind that is hard to resist Captatx Gasheski of the Polish guards at La Salle, HI., shot his wife and held the police at bay with two pistols. The fire department was called out and had commenced to pour two streams of water on him, when he placed his weapons, one to his heart, the other to his head, and fired. Masteb "Workman Powderlt says: 'The Knights of Labor are holding .their own. Wo have got rid of the internal dissensions that made us so much trouble. I might tell you that we are gaining thousands of new members, and all that sort of stuff, but I won't as I said before, we are holding our own." Tin plates now form more than a halE in weight and a third in value of the British iron exports to this coun try, and are the only important item of such exports that is not decreasing. It is not at all surprising then that the organs of the free trade party should receive the proposal to in crease the duty and make the plates at home with so much displeasure and consternation. efce biht siovfnft. jarfjrrTgrra J The ignorant, pledahre-loving, happy-go-lnchy negro of Washington ,is :., c.vefiiliy uj-rriminntiug with icf- ereuce t the payment of bills as the insolvent merchant who is making a list of preferred creditors. The grocer or butcher who trusts him is often likely to wait for his money until the ink on the account-book becomes pale and illegible, but the professional man the doctor or the lawyer always gets his money. He looks upon a doctor with a kind of superstitious respect The simplicity of his mind makes him an uncanny being who brings about wonderful results by means that can be little short of supernatural. He will bring his last 50 cents to a doctor whom he has employed and force it upon him, whether he wants it or not. "Take it, boss," says he: ''I'll be hoodooed if you don't take it." The lawyer is also regarded with awe be cause of his mysterious connection with the powers of the law, and in most cases has little trouble in collect- lngTns fees. A Fortunate Druggist. Mr. Edwin W. Joy a prosperous druggist on the corner of Stockton and Market streets, in San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medi cine kings of the country. But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that he has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student of Bot any, located in this city. His practice was not extensive, and yet the few cases that came to him attracted no little atten tion? Ilis great success seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders and vitiated blood. He seemed almost infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much amystery as himself, j After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all the prescriptions he had filled for the erratic doctor, he began a systematic analysis lie discov ered running all through the prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetable extracts indigenous to California 60 simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the active principles involved So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that he had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements In a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise the taste, and put it before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im mediately the same stories came back of its astonishing effects, and the mystery was solved' and the talk it has created 'has already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in daily from nil over the coast And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. $. F Examiner. A whale was driven ashore on the coast of Labrador last month which had a dozen wrap3 of chain around his body and a big anchor to tote around with him. The ft"iv Diseovry.
