m ?ftc flaUg SWoviatt. AsTUlllA. Ult hiatal . THURSDAY-.. .JULY 11. 18S9. Pbesidekt -Harrison will never surpass tlie beauty of Lis utterance ou the Jolinstown calamity: ''We can do nothing better than to put around the dark picture the golden border of love and sympathy." , Of sixteen applicants for charity, who were followed about by an officer in Chicago, every one proved to be a base impostor, and twelve of them had stolen articles from houses where money had been given them. VALUABLE CODFISH BANKS. Some Suggestions From San Francisco. Capt Bell, of the steamer A. B. Field, who was formerly an inspector of fisheries on the Atlantic coast, re cently reported at Astoria that he had found a codfish bank about eight miles from Nestucca, which is near Cape Lookout, on the Oregon coast, about sixty-five miles south of the Columbia river. The cod were found in great numbers, and were large and of excel lent quality. Tins is said to be the first time that cod have ever been found in any quantity south of "Van couver island, and in fact, the true cod has not been found heretofore south of the Alaskan shores. Professor Davidson has forwarded this informa tion to Washington, to be incorpo rated in the Coast Pilot soon to be issued. It can hardly be that Captain Bell, an old inspector of fisheries, can be mistaken, but in view of the impor tance of the discovery, and to make assurance doubly sure, it would be well for the Albatross, the vessel of the United States fish commission, to make a cruise in the locality indicated and to report officially on what she finds. If it be that a codfish bank of any considerable size exists so short a distance from this port, our fishermen ought to know it at once, for there is too much wealth in such a discovery to allow it to remain unused any longer. Cod fishing in such a locality would be mere pastime as compared with the fishing on the Atlantic coast. There the life of the fisherman is one contin ued round of hardship, exposure and danger. The perils of the sea in every conceivable form assail his little craft and make his life one of incessant toil and anxiety. Gales, ice, fogs, collis ions, all contrive to war against him, and added to these are the facts of an inhospitable shore under his lee, and the risk of seizure and confiscation if he oversteps the three mile limit as fixed by Great Britain and the Do minion of Canada. Contrasted to this a fishing voyage to the banks oil" Cape Lookout would be nothing more than a yachting trip. Even in midwinter there would be no danger of icebergs or floating ice, and none of that bitter Arctic breath which congeals everything before it and turns canvas into boards and hemp rigging into iron. The most our fishermen would have to fear would be a southeaster, and their schooners will ride out a gale as securely as and much more easily than would the largest man-of-war that ever left the stocks. The food supply of the Pacific ocean, except at the very mouths of the rivers and harbors, is almost an unknown quantity. The Atlantic coast has bean searched and fished and sounded until it is as well known as the rivers themselves; but it seems to have been assumed, until very re cently, that the Pacific is barren of food fishes. The rivers have been ex plored until the salmon-packing in dustry has grown to enormous pro portions, but the ocean itself is almost as innocent of fishing vessels as when Sir Francis Drake first plowed its waters with an English keel, or when the Spanish galleons made their yearly voyage from the Philip pine islands to Panama and the west ern coast of Mexico. It is time that our ocean should re ceive the study and attention which are its due, and the Albatross has been sent around here for the pur pose of doing the necessary work. She has already done some exploring, but her work has only just begun, and it would certainly be wise and proper that her next cruise should be to this discovery of Captain Bell's, for it is too important a matter to be neglected. Editorial in S. F. Chronicle, 7. The Northern Coast. Captain George, pilot of the steam ship Qeo. W. Elder, at present on the Alaskan route of the Pacific Coast Steamship Co., has given the follow ing information to the United States hydrographic effice: I made a discovery of a breaker last November between Forrester's Island and the north shore; breaker one-half mile north-northeast; extreme hang of land to the eastward about Cape Magdalena, east one-quarter south (mag.); south point Forrester's Island south (mag.). The breaker is well to the southward of "Wolf Rock and en tirely distinct from it. It lies ap proximately four miles from the north shore, called Dill's Island. In "Wrangel narrows the buoys and beacons are in place up to Vexation Point. At this place the black buoy, No. 2, has half mile to the westward. The red spar buoy, No. 8, Danger Point, has disappeared. The red spar buoy, No. 10, Eock Point, has drifted half a mile to westward, and is right in the channel. The red spar buoy, No. 12, Finger Point, is invisible at times, and shows only a foot or two at best The red spar buoy, No. 14, Wrangel North Flat, is in the same condition. ,The black buoy, No. 1, Morris' Eeef, Northern Eapids, has drifted to the westward and is near the shore, three quarters of a mile to the westward of Lindenberg harbor. Buoy No. 1, in Neva straits, is only visible at times. TELEGMPHIC . Specials to The Astorian. THE (JEAND LODGE, A. 0. TJ. W. Newsy Items from the Metropolis. Portland, July 10. Hare intro duced.document No. 1, increasing ju diciary committee from three to seven members, which document was adopted without debate. The lodge then adjourned until 11 o'clock, when the lodge reconvened. The committee on credentials, submitted a report, and on motion the grand master appointed P M., C. A. Wheeler, No. 25, as reading clerk. The grand lodge degree was then conferred upon rep resentatives, and past masters of various lodges. Over 4,000 was subscribed for the Ellensburg sufferers. CRMIKAIi MATTERS. G. W- Carraway, Kansas constable who wired to sheriff Kelly to arrest Mrs. Lizzie Walters who is wanted in mat state lor murder nas not yet ar rived, although he should have put in an appearance here four days aero. Mrs. Walters was released on a writ of habeas corpus late Monday after noon and at once proceeded with her husband to Seattle. Since then noth ing has been heard of the enterpris ing and energetic Kansas decective. Jacob Zimmerman who told such a bungling story of having been robbed of $2,000 by bunko sharps is still be moaning his luck. In a package given Zimmerman purporting to be greenbacks, but which turned out to be nothing but worthless paper, a well written note was found, the full text of which reads as follews: "You have lost your money by try ing to skin somebody else. It will do you no good to say anything about it, but by keeping your mouth shut your neighbors will not know what an old fool you have .been. A still tongue shows a wise head." A Fortunate Druggist. Mr. Edwin W. Joy a prosperous druggist on the comer of Stockton and Market Btrccts, In San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medi cine kings of the country. But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that behas struck it big, an Eiamintr reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student of Bot any, located in this city. His practice was not extensive, and yet the few cases that came to him attracted no little atten tion. His greatsucccss seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders and vitiated blood. He seemed almost infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much a mystery as himself. , After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all the prescriptions he had filled for the erratic doctor, he began a systematic analysis He discov ered running all through the prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a conple of vegetable extracts indigenous toCalifornla so simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy a3 to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the active principles involved So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that he had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements in a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise the taste, and put it before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im mediately the same stories came back of its astonishing effects, and the mystery was solved, and the talk it has created iia3 already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in daily from all over the coast. And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. S, F Examiner.
