ra Wm mftj gtwIiUt. ASTORIA. OREGON: THUKSDAY.. ...JULY 4, 18S9. A GREAT CELEBRATION. This is the real Centennial Fourth. One hundred years ago in 1789 our history as a nation began. Ten thou sand Fourth of July orators will to day tell the grand story of a century of national existence. The greatest celebration the nation ever had goes on to-day. It is not in the roar of cannon or the martial tread of the parades, nor in the huzzas of the 65,000,000 people. That is a great celebration, indeed, but The Astobian cites a greater one. To-day come together 300 men to arrange for th admission of four great common-wealths. To-day meet four constitutional conventiens: one at Olympia to de cide upon the constitution of the new state of "Washingten: one at Helena, of the Montana delegates: one at Sioux Falls for South Daketa: one at Bismarck for North Dakota. Each will consist of 75 men and their actions will make the popular form of government for the citizens of the four new states. Is not this a magnificent celebration of the centennial Fourth! The fact is one unequaled in the world's history; that on the beginning of the second century of the nation, amid peace and plenty, surrounded by unexampled prosperity, four new states, sovereign commonwealths, step in stately grandeur to the front and are hailed and known bv the other 38 that grace the galaxy of stars on the na tion's flag. This thought, which our readers can elaborate to suit themselves, is The Astortan's contribution to the -literature, the orations, and the American talk of the Fourth of July 1889. Hurrah for the four new states, and the progress of the nation that has made possible their creation on the nation's centennial Fourth ! Attendants and officers in prisons, poor houses and lunatic asylums need to be careful how they treat those committed to their care. They can never be sure that it is not a news paper reporter they are maltreating, who will record their deeds in cold black and white, and who had himself locked up for that very purpose. King Kalakaua is trying io borrow S10,000 with which to go to Paris to see his old friend the elephant. Sharps and Flats. Grit makes the man, and want of it the chump: the men who win lay hold, hang on and hump. It is said of an inveterate gambler that on the day of judgment he would "play the last trump." Bad luck will not long pursue the man who does not trust it, but buckles down to work on his own account. Mary Anderson is said to be re gaining her nervous poise in London. Her avoirdupois, however, is still insignificant. Buffalo Bill continues to hold his position as the social lion of Paris. He is as much at home now in a French salon as he ever -was in a Col orado saloon. "It takes a calf to catch a calf," as the comic opera singer said when she gave a wicked look and saucy kick in the direction of the callow youths in the front row of the orchestra. The gossips of Europe tell great yarns about the shah of Persia s gran deur. t is stated that tue precious stones embedded in his throne are worth S30,000,000. On the other hand, his manners aren't worth a de narius. Is Consumption Incurable? Head the follewing: Mr. C. II. Morris, Newark, Ark., says: "Was down with Abscess of Lungs, and friends and phy sicians pronounced me an Incurable Consumptive. Began taking Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, am now on my third bottle, and able to oversee the work on my farm. It is the imest medicine ever made." Jesse Middleware, Decatur, Ohio. says: "Had it not been for Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumptien I would have died of Lumr Troubles. Was given up by doctors. Am now in best ot health."
