They ask for temporary aid and it is fitting that Astoria should respond. TiieAstobiax sug gests tliat three or four puhlic spirited men organize themselves into a com mittee and begin taking subscriptions at once. In a case like this, he gives twice who gives quickly. The Astoria- suggests that Mayor Page select two or three gentlemen to assist him and collect a handsome purse for the Seattle sufferers before the sun goes down. A meeting is hereby called of public spirited citizens, at the police court at ten o'clock this morning, to take hold of this matter and organize a relief committee to raise and forward aid to the stricken, homeless ones nf Seattle. The German bark Solide goes to Conception Bay, Chile, with a cargo or solide lumber, GC5 M., worth 87, 919. The steamer Oen. Miles arrived from Portland yesterday morning and after taking on a small freight left for Gray's harbor. The first forest fire this year of any consequence, noticed by the reporter, was burning fiercely at Gray's bay, across the river, yesterday. G. WT. Sanborn, who went to Seat tle last night, had 8,000 cases salmon stored in one of the burned ware houses and has gone to see about his property. C. P. Upshur's Studebakcr sulky broke yesterday; after the mare had capered along a hundred yards she stopped and what might havo been a serious accident was averted. A counterfeit silver certificate has made its appearance. On tho medal lion on the back of the note in the word "Pliiribus" the '-i" is missing, and there are other discrepancies. Though there were seven ifcatbs m this jurisdiction A. O. U. , last month, bat one assessment SI is to be collected from the members; there being enough on hand to pay all but one. . Portland needs two tilings at present, as much as anything else first a good supply of pure water, from Bull Run, orelsewhere; and second annex ation of East Portland aud Albina, and n free bridge. Till August 1st it is now unlawful to hunt, pursue or kill any deer or elk. Any person is guilty of misde meanor -who will kill these animals at any time for their skins or horns, and during tho close season prima facie evidence against the accused is even having in possession, or offering for sale any skin or meat. The associated press correspondent at Johnstown is an ass. Instead of sending facts ho telegraplis rot, which he believes to be rhetoric. Contrast his attempt at "fine writing" with the admirable account of the Samoau dis nBter, that was sent by the associated press-reporter -who went there. That was grand; it was splendid newspaper work. The Johnstown rubbish is ridiculous. The exersises yesterday afternoon at the school, were witnessed by a large number of patrons and friends. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers, and with the bright happy faces of the children made a pleasing picture. The programme r ..lrif 1ia rin-ht lemrth to be en- joyable, and much praise is due the children and their instructors. A "entle request is made in tho in terest of the rising generation whom the newspapers educate. The gentle request is made to several of our esteemed contemporaries to leave out the "h" from tho word "exorbitant" That word is used a great deal now new adays: it is n nice word, though over worked, and it is a thrice daily misery to find it with a great big lower case "h" jammed in -where it has no busi ness. An Enthusiastic Intent to Go Ahead. A Proclamation From Governor Moore. Special to Tn Astomas Seattle, June 7. The I033 by yes terday's fire will reach ten million dol lars, but already in n number of places gangs of workmen have begun to grade and clean up lots preparatory to rebuilding. A great many mer chants have secured quarters in the residence portion of the city and are open this morning with remnants of stock saved from the fire. The people have decided to rebuild the city with brick and stone. This decision was reached quickly and almost unani mously at a meeting held this morn ing. The call was published in this morning's paper asking the citizens to convene at the regimental urmory at 11 o'clock to consider the matter of ways and means. The question discussed was "what shall wo do under the trying circum stances?"' The attendance was large. Previous to the calling of the assem blage to order those present gathered together in small groups and earnest ly canvassed the situation. Not a a single long face is to bo seen. No one, not aware of the facts, would have imagined that the assembly was in the midst of an nwful calamity. The air of cheerful earnestness was sur prising. At 11 o'clock mayor Moran called the meeting to order by rapping on the table at one side of the large hall. Immediately he was surrounded by five or six hundred citizens, each one bent on active business. No more earnest gathering was ever seen any where. Mayor Moran stated that the city council was to hold a meeting to night, and desired an expression of opinion on two important questions; they were, as to whether they should permit the erection of wooden build ings within the fire limits of the city, and whether several important busi ness streets should be straightened and made wider. Judge Hoyt thought that a suspen sion of the fire limit ordinance for one year would be favored by the business community. G. Morris Heller said if a single wooden building was erected it will remain until it wa3 again burned down. Ho thought that no wooden buildings should be erected withinjthe fire limits. The remarks of this speaker were received with such applause that no subsequent speaker said anything in favor of per mitting the erection of temporary frame buildings. Geo. D. Adair mentioned the fact that S550 had been raised for the Johnstown sufferers, and asked if that sum had not better be applied to the home relief fund. One hundred voices said "No, let her go." A committee of five was appointed to confer with the city authorities con cerning the subject bf widening the streets. Another committee of five was appointed to receive donations ana extend relief where it is found necessary. All the companies of the 1st regi ment are out guarding damaged prop erty, and preventing any pilfering of merchandise or home furnishings. The city is quiet, nnd everybody hope ful. OVEi! Joy a prosperous druggist on the comer ot Stockton and Market streets, in San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medi cine kings of the country. But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that ho has struck It big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student of Dot any, located in this city. Ills practice was not extensive, and yet tho few case that came to him attracted no little atten tion, nbgreatsuccess seemed to be iutbe treatment of liver and kidney disorders "aud vitiated blood. Ho seemed almost Infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much amystery as himself. After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all the prescriptions ho had filled for the erratic doctor, he began a systematic analysis. Ho discov ered running all through tho prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetable extracts indigenous to California so simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate tho suspicion that they were tho active principles Invoked. So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that he had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements In a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise tho taste, and put It beforo his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparllla. Im mediately tho tamo stories came back of its astonishing effects, and the mystery was solved, and tho talk it has crcated'has already caused it to step Into prominence, and orders pour In dally from all over the coast. And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. & F Examintr. Salmon Started East. Sixteen freight cars, contain ing about 500,000 pounds of canned salmon, were started east over the Northern Pacific rail road this morning' for J. K. Arms by & Co., Chicago.
