IZ3 flic ait! gstorimt. ASTORIA. OREGON: FRinT. FEBRUARY '89 An idiotorial in an exchange pro poses that Alaska ba used a3 a penal colony. Portland wheat merchants have branch houses on the Sound, but none at the month ol the Columbia Ore gon's seaport. The Chicago Times has now SH,- 118,000 worth of libel suits on hand and does not seem to be worried oTer them a bit. 'Western journalism is not frightened at trifles. What is regarded as the moot seri ous outbreak of salmon disease on record is at present raging amongst fish of the salmon kind in tho Annan and its numerous tributaries. ExPEKiiiEN-rnns at Manhattan, Kans., have discovered that tho use of salt on wheat fields will greatly in crease the yield. It is also announced that salt will kill potato bugs. If Portland would have the rail roads make Astoria a common point with Tacoma for grain the problem of pilotage and towage would bo solved. The difficulty is in trying to make an inland town a common point with seaports. Tnn Oregonian virtually says that the O. E. & N. Oo. is in the control of the Northern Pacific We all know that the Northern Pacific is doing and will do all it can for tho upbuilding of tho Sound country. Yet tho Orego nian wants pilotage so reduced as to run tho schooner off and put both tow age and pilotage in the hands of the o. e. & y. Co. Toe world can never bo sure at any time that a revolution may not over throw the French republic. A for eign correspondent well says that ever since 1870 the great majority of the French people have looked forward to "tho day of retribution," when Ger many shall be compelled to give back Alsace and Lorraine, nnd if tho re public will not lead them to that end, thoy will seek some form of govern ment that will. ODDS AND ENDS. Another fall of rock is reported at the Horseshoe Falls, Niagara, right nt the crest. Dr. Gatling of gun tamo says he is working on a steam torpedo boat that nothing can resist. The Chicago Farmers' llcvicw says winter wheat has not been damaged by tho mild weather. At a recent swell party in New York tho young men wore knee breeches and black silk stockings. A motion is on foot in Augusta, Ga., to establish a bleachery. There is not such a plant in tho south. Many of the people in Seward county, Kan., are on the verge of starvation. The county is in that part of Kansas which suffered from crop failures. The total length of the new Man hattan bridge across the Harlem river, including span and approaches, is 2, 38i feet, It will be opened Washing ton's birthday. The absorption by the Pullman company of all the parlor and sleep ing car business in the United States, except that portion retained by tho Vauderbilt roads, is announced. A sweeping sinti-trust law intro duced in the Illinois legislature, will be opposed chiefly by the labor men, Its "provisions, if enforced, would break up overy labor orgaaizition in the state. It is necessary, to obtain good crops in western Kansas, say tho paper of that region, to plow tho groan.i eiist and west, and then plant alternate rows of corn and enne, b 'ginn:-g on the south side. Notwithstanding England's suprem acy in shipbuilding, she sends to Maine for one kind of water craft. A firm of Passadumkeag canoe-builders have just received a large order for canoes from a concern at Henly-on Thames, to whom they sent a large number of canoes last ear. The discovery of an opium joint at Pittsfield is, of conrsc, hailed by the New York papers as showing the spread of this vice into tho heart of New England. The decline and fall of New England is a stock subject of New York editorial lamentations. Boston Transcript. X Woman's Plscorcrj-. "Another wonderful discovery lias been made and that too by a lady In tht3 county. Disease fastened its clutch es upon her and for seven jears she withstood its severest tests, but her vi tal organs were undermined and death seemed Imminent. For three montli3 she couched incessantly and could nnt sleep. She bought of us a bottle of Dr, King's Sow Discovery for Consump tion and was so much relieved on tak ing first dose that she slept all night aud with one bottle has been miracu lously cured. Her name is Mrs. Luther Lutz." Thus write W. C. Herrlck & Co., ofShelbyville.N. C Get a free trial bottle at J. W. Conn's Drug Store. TelephoiiciiuaKiui; nouse. Best Beds in town. The house committee on foreign af- t airs has considered the diplomatic and consular appropriation bill and voted to non-concur in all the cenate amendments and nik for a conferenco with tho senate thcrcou. This in cludes the amendments of 3100,000 to establish a coaling station at Pango pango nnd 5500,000 to enable the president to carry out tho treaty stipulations with Samoa. The bill will be reported back to the house and go into conference immediately, when the house conferees will agree to nil the spnato amendments except that making appropriations for the Pango Pango coaling station. This being in the naval appropriation bill, will bo stricken out on the diplomatic bill. The object of tho committeo in in nou-conenrring iu all tho amend ments was to secure as early action on the bill as possible. WHAT SENATOR SnERMAN S WS. New York, Feb. 7. In an inter view on the Samoan difficulty sena tor Sherman says: "Whatever tho newspapers may say, there is nothing iu the situation that would justify on the part of cither nation a breach of tho peace until every mears is ex hausted to bring about a peaceful and quiet settlement of this controversy. 1 say, therefore, first, wo want to as sert our rights and maintain and up hold them, nnd nobody will call them iu question. Next, wo want to do what we ought to do to thoso poor people. Therefore I am willing to vote any sum of money to enable the president either to conduct negotia tions, to make survey of the harbor, or to get better information in regard to the country there and place it at tho discretion of Mr. Cleveland or General Harrison, aud I have no doubt, with the powers thus given to them to send agent3 there or to send shins, they will bring abo.it a solu tion of this small controversy." A SC3PESDED BANK Marotette, Mich., Feb. 7. J.-Ar. Knapp, banker, has suspended, and tho liauk is now in the hands of a re ceiver. The liabilities are about S50.000. Tho suspension was caused by hard collections and a large draft which could not bo met. Wviuti;trl"s JJri-r. And Free Lunch at the Tt 'ojil.im b loon, s cents. miiirocgji u NEW TO-DAY. (Tho bill as introduced provide 1 thai tae ilr.nv "sh ill not U lew than mo hundred feet in length.") Now it appears that some of the legislators want to add 35 feet to the length of the draw. This would add S23.000 to its cost, and is an unnec essary length. The board of direct ors will have a consultation in regard to the matter which, will probably, be now delayed in its passage. .flFMlG! hf&Xj A Pleasing Sense of Health and Strength Renewed, and of Ease and Comfort Follows the use of Syrup of Figs, as it act3 gently on the Kidneys, Liver Bowels Effectually Cleansing tho System when Costive or Bilioa3, Dispelling Colds, Headaches and Fevers and permanently curing IIABITXTAL CONSTIPATION nithout weakening or irritdtinj tho or gans on Mhich it z.cti.
