The total number of votes cast in Oregon at the presidential election was 1.914. The population of the state, on the basis of five persons to one vote, the ratio which obtains in thejsast. is 309.570. In 18S0, 40,880 votes, representing 204,400 popula tion, were cast, and in 1881, 52,732 votes representing 263.660 population At the regular meeting of Pacific Lodge No. 17, K. of P., held last eve ning the following officers were eleeted: E. In attempting to remove his gun from bis boat, he seized it by the muzzle and drew it toward bim. Ot course the hammer caught on something and the gun 'was discharged, taking effect in his arm Dr. J. A. Fulton saved as much of the shot as possible, and did whit be could to make the unfortunate man comfortable and let bim return borne. Major Barter, formerly managing editor of the Spokane Falls Morning Review is insane and for ten days, says the Post,InteIligencer, this un fortunate man has walked the streets night and day, gesticulating in an ex cited manner about his groat wealth wnicu has suddenly been thrust upon him. It his mania merely exhibited itself in newspaper circles it would not have excited so much comment, but he is running from one promin ent business man to another all day long witn ms hallucinations. .Nei ther bis condition nor conduct seems to produce any effect on the manatre ment of the" paper that brought him nere. W. H. Whitcomb has sold the Telephone restaurant to Fred Gros baner and Peter Bracb.who will take possession to-morrow morning. The Pacific Coast Express company announce that they will commence business on the 10th inst. This a home enterprise, and is rendered a necessity by the needs of a great ana growing section that is tributary to this city. Residents of Pacific county W. 1., and points beyond that, give a large trade to this city, and have for a long time felt the need ot a reliable express to facilitate communication and trade with Astoria, and this com panyv organized and managed by prominent business men in Astoria. and Pacific county, should receive the patronage and support its enter prise deserves. See their adv't. Speaking of the Chinese hospital which is to be built at Portland, the Oregonian says: The hospital will not only be a borne for the sick, but also a retreat for the aged and infirm. It will be under the direct control of the Chinese Free Mason company and also under the jurisdiction of the city authorities. Well trained and efficient nurses will care for the sick and their native physicians will provide medical attendance. The grounds will be well kept up, and the entire institution will be under the supervision of some one who will be employed to remain on the premises and devote himself exclusively to its management. The institution will be supported by the Chinese themselves, both by assessments and through contributions from the different Chi nese companies. Yesterday afternoon the venerable W. H. Gray, while mounted on a scaffolding supported by trestles, to do some work in his building at the loot ot .Benton street missed his foot ing and fell to the floor a distance of some five or six feet striking on his shoulder, sustaining an intra capsu lar fracture of the bumerns. There is nothing bumerons about this accident for the old gentleman, thoucb. He should be more cautious at his ad vanced age and leave work on lofty elevations to thoso who ore younger and will not break so easy. With good care and caution the venerable gentleman might live to pass bis hnndreth birthday and entertain bis children's grand children and great grand children with stories of his pioneer life away back in the '30s. A happy occasion, long to be re membered by the friends and rela tives present, was the marriage of Mr. Geo. W. Heald, of Petalumn, Cal., and Miss Bertha A. Powell, of this city, both well and favorably known, at the residence of the bride's par ents, on Cathlamet bay, Rev. Geo. W. Grannis officiating. After the ceremony was performed a faw pleas ant hours were spent in the happy home, a part of the ffuests. in com pany with the parson, performed the journey to Astoria through the rain ana mud, an experience thai will not soon be forgotten.
